Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@jab1 There is a cabinet 0.2miles away from my house, I'm assuming that's the exchange you are talking about?

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@MisterW I am not sure what a "master socket" is, is it the photo below? The router is connected to this.

I moved to this house about a year ago, and the previous owners did extend the house about 10 years ago and redid all the wiring etc, and there is a slight electricity issue in the house.

We have BT wooden poles out side with 2 black cables that go into our lofts.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@MrEkeis That, in theory, should be your fibre cab, and at that distance, based on my experience when I was on FTTC, with a similar 'final mile' of copper, I would suggest you are looking towards the lower end of you 'estimated speeds'.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

That distance would be consistent with the BT checker estimates - but it doesn't really match the attenuation your router reports.

There may be some cause other than distance for the attenuation and hence the lower than expected attainable speed. First thing to try is connecting to the test socket to eliminate internal wiring.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@corringham - that will entail @MrEkeis finding the master socket - what he is plugged into now certainly isn't it.😉

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@MrEkeis ahah, we might be getting somewhere. That's not a master socket its an extension. You should have an 'official' Openreach master socket somewhere like this

BT Openreach™ MK4 VDSL Plate & NTE5C Master Socket - Combined Unit ...

or this

UPDATE A Quick Look at BT Openreach's New NTE5C Master Socket ...

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@MisterW I found this in one of the closets , probably that? Going to connect it to that, thank you.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@MrEkeis

As well as finding the 'real' master socket, do you have other extensions in the house? I have had experience of reconnecting extensions correctly in the master socket more than doubling the speed.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

Fix

@MrEkeis first, unscrew the faceplate ( the lower half of the front plate ). Careful , there may be wires connected to the rear of it.

Once unscrewed, it should reveal another BT socket on the backplate (the test socket). Plug the filter and router into that and then post the helpdesk details as previously

Maybe also take a photo of any wires connected to the faceplate.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

...Yep! That's it. The test socket itself is behind the 'consumer plate', which is the lower half of that socket. You will need to unscrew it to remove - it will still have your extension socket wired to it. That is an older type NTE 5, not the current NTE 5C which has a clip on/off consumer plate, with no wiring attached to it.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@Baldrick1 Hi, thanks for the reply.

I could not find any other extensions. I see two cables going into the house, it seems like one of them is connected to the master socket and the other has been cut?

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

@MrEkeis

Wow that’s better, The increase in SNR shows that there is now headroom for the DLM to automatically increase your speed. If you can live with the hub at this location then chop off the extension wiring and replace the faceplate. The trick now is to get it set up and then leave it alone for a week or so to see if your speed slowly improves.

If you have a landline and want to use the extension for that then you need to fit a filtered faceplate just for phones.

Re: Broadband speed availability has changed after order

The current data rate/attainable are still wide apart, it will be interesting to see if DLM increases the current.

The DLM should get reset when the Plusnet takeover happens.

What the devil is that box that the extension wiring is going to ? is it just a junction box ? seems the wrong shape...

is it an external ringer ?

If you have a landline

Well if he has , he won't have it for much longer! it will be cancelled on the transfer to PN
