Currenmt Outage (DNS?) it still appears flaky

This for me is now in my 3rd day without Plusnet BB. I have a Hub1 where you cannot change the DNS & have updated my  Win 11 DNS to use the Google IP's but no difference as I expect the hub is just using it's settings. I'm writing this tethered to Vodafone which is doable but not satisfactory & will eventually cost me extra. Trying to find out what exactly is going on is very hard. Would I be better off with a new Hub (is it hub 2?). Any help greatly appreciated.

As the DNS issue is resolved, you appear to have a different issue. What are the symptoms of the fault, and how far to the internet can you get?

Re: Currenmt Outage (DNS?) it still appears flaky

Good afternoon all, just thought I would mention a few things as I am new to plusnet (11Nov 2023).

Yesterdays DNS issue was a weird one for me as for some reason my Fire stick alternate DNS is set to google (Perhaps by default, as I did not change it?), so I didn't actually notice the DNS outage until I fired up my laptop to check some email etc.

So for anyone not an IT Geek, it's fairly easy to fix this issue if this happens to you and you are stuck.

DNS = Domain Name Service

In plain speak this means when you type in google.co.uk for example, your PC asks the DNS for the actually physical IP address of the server which has the domain name google.co.uk. Your PC then goes to the address, assuming it got the information from the DNS server. Yesterday's outage meant anyone trying to surf the web or contact a web service etc with an HTTPS address such as google.co.uk would not connect, as the DNS service was down.

Here is an article that explains a lot more about DNS and why/how to change things for your devices.

Hope that helps Cheesy

Re: Currenmt Outage (DNS?) it still appears flaky

Sorry I haven't replied sooner. It got fixed about an hour ago from the support desk via a message I posted on X. Don't really know what actually fixed it but, the usual solutions about entering DNS settings in the OS didn't work at all. This seems to be primarily because I'm using a Hub 1 which does not permit changes to the DNS in the hub & I think & the support guy seemed to confirm this that changes in OS wouldn't be passed through. So after nearly 5 days I'm finally back. I don't know what the support guy did apart from initially change my password, but all now seems to be OK & am back to normal having reset my password again.

Have to say though not impressed with this. Seems that the major part of this was fixed fairly quickly & loads of people got back in but a number of us (in the small thousands from what I can gather).

I'm an aging retired IT Manager but still have me marbles & it shows how much we now rely on internet service. I thought I'd got away from all of this sort of hassle!!
