Extremely reduced service in the evenings last few days

Hello,

For the last few days we've had extremely slow download speeds in the evening, starting around 5ish - from our usual speed of around 40Mb/s down to 3-4Mb/s. I used the HELP SMS system but the advisor could not detect any issues. Would it be possible to further investigate this?

The router has been restarted etc, and the issue is external (nothing on the internal network hogging traffic).

@cerzi These things can be a pain to trace, but sight of your routers Help Desk or Technical Log would be a start.

Sorry, I'm struggling to understand what specific info you're after - the screenshot shows serial number, firmware version, etc - presumably that info will be of little use given I am not using a hub router? If the Event Log is needed, is that not the log I posted above?

OK. Sorry, that is a screenshot of the PN Hub2 Technical log (cut short) but what we need is  essentially your DSL  uptime, connection speed, and SNR values (as a start).

@cerzi Having checked what an ASUS TUF is, it appears to be a laptop - are you saying that incorporates a router? I doubt it, TBH.

@cerzi  do you have a DSL version of the router, or are you using a separate modem? What is the Asus Router model number?

If it is a DSL router there should be a DSL Log Tab under the System Log folder which if you post will help.

Otherwise which modem are you using?

Ok, I'm an idiot as I'm actually still using the hub two in bridge mode as a modem, so was able to directly connect to get the info you need:

It's an ASUS TUF-AX3000 - definitely not a laptop!😅 - only recently got it because I needed QoS, but anyway. Seems like the issue is with the line?

@cerzi  the evidence you have shown does not suggest a line issue, more likely to be congestion, either on your LAN or maybe elsewhere.

@cerzi Having seen that data, I agree with @Mustrum - you do bot have any connection issues. Do you have anything like OneDrive or similar?

As a  point of interest, as ASUS unhelpfully use the 'TUF'  label for laptops and routers, had you given the full model number for your router,my confusion would not have arisen.

I am 100% certain it isn't LAN congestion, as I have been monitoring network traffic obsessively since the problem started over the weekend.

Here is the most recent tab of my speed tests (performed on the router), which show the sudden drop-off around 5pm reaching rock bottom around 9-10pm and then back to normal in the morning.

And below is network traffic over the last 24 hours, as you can see in the evening when the router was reporting less than 2Mbps speeds the network traffic was relatively low, certainly not using all of the typical bandwidth available. 

Any ideas what else can be tried? Should I escalate this with Plusnet or is there anything else to check? Have never experienced this kind of problem living at this address for nearly 15 years - and Plusnet for more than half of that!

I take it from the details about 2.5/5 GHz Wi-Fi that is how you are linking to the router? Can you try connecting via an Ethernet cable, as the speed problem may simply be a result of congestion on the Wi-Fi channels.

How many other Wi-Fi APs can you see displayed on your laptop at the time the slow downs occur?
