Fibre extra

Hi

Contract to renew and being offered Fibre extra for a small extra charge but ....

Currently I have 36 line speed which gives me 14 to 17 on average - so if I opt for "extra" am I to assume I will get say 25 to 30

I have read on here and used the BT Checker [using my address] and the top line had 26 ?

Also do I need / get a new Router as well

Cheers Bamboozled - managed to copy top  lines in case it is useful

No, it doesnt work like that. Upgrading to Extra only allows the line to go faster IF it is capable of it. What speed a line is capable of is largely based on the distance from the cabinet. From those estimates, your line would not be capable of increased speeds.

Re: Fibre extra

@Bamboozled  Fibre extra will have no effect on your speed, Plusnet shouldn't even allow you to order it. You have to be syncing at the full 40Mbps download on Unlimited fibre, then Fibre Extra removes the 40Mbps cap to allow the line to run at higher speeds. You are nowhere near 40Mbps so nothing would change.

Don't understand "Currently I have 36 line speed which gives me 14 to 17 on average"  You should be getting throughput speeds of over 20Mbps with  a sync speed around 25Mbps.

I would raise a speed fault to get Plusnet to investigate.

Re: Fibre extra

Thanks RealAleMadrid * - great user name btw

I will turn down the Fibre extra offer based on that reply.

Would be daft to pay [slightly] more to get the same speed and that was reason I asked the question - because I simply had no idea 😄

My  latest speed check [I just did] was 18.57 - that is the highest Ive ever seen - usually it is 14 to 17 which is adequate - as it seems "fast" and no buffering on streamed TV etc so I assumed the loss of speed [from 36mbs] was due to me being 0.7 miles from Cabinet and in fact there are only 3 properties after mine and then open countryside

So do you think I could - or should get more ?

Thanks again

Re: Fibre extra

Fix

@Bamboozled

Let’s start again,

I suspect that your 36Mbps is just quoting the average speed that all connections to the 40/10 service get, not your expected average speed. You will get less than the average because of your distance from the FTTC cabinet.

Your sync speed is estimated to be in the range 16.3 to 26 Mbps. Your actual measured speed using a speed tester will be less than this by say 10%.

Your current speed fits within this range. Consequently there’s no point in paying for a faster service.

Re: Fibre extra

Thanks very much baldrick1

No point as you say for upping my speed - many thanks

I dont think the email was specific to me - more probably a generic one as ir also mentioned ringing to "continue my TV subscription" as well

Thanks again JT - will tick the fixed tab

Re: Fibre extra

My normal Fibre download speed is 28 -30Mbs
On renewal I have now been offered Fibre Extra (46 -51) with a Guaranteed speed of 41Mbs

My fibre cabinet is just outside the exchange on the main road, the remainder of the route is 50 year old copper
ie 10% fibre. 90% copper

How can PN offer me this upgrade in speed when to me it seems  impossible

Re: Fibre extra

@Bures3

What is the estimated range of speed for your line if you put your phone number in here:  https://www.broadbandchecker.btwholesale.com/#/ADSL?

It's possible that you have a fault on your line.
