Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

If the Hub two has not been factory reset since 31/10/2024 the WAN event log may have the answer.

From the Home page >Advanced Settings >Technical log >Event log Select category WAN

Look for a line which looks something like

14:03:59, 21 Sep. DSL Link Up: Down Rate=nnnnnkbps, Up Rate=nnnnnkbps; SNR Margin Down=n.ndB, Up=n.ndB

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

Yes the previous deal SNR was much higher so that may be it. See photo.

Can Plusnet increase the current SNR a little (maybe up to 6?) to get more stability or is it done automatically by some monitoring & control system?

Hopefully @Marsh is still following the thread and he can comment?

@Madeleyite  On FTTC and SOGEA Plusnet have no control of the line parameters, it is all automatic and done by the Openreach DLM (Dynamic Line Monitoring) System.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

Understood and thank you but I am sure that in the past Plusnet have manually tweaked the SNR value after which the DLM begins monitoring/controlling around that new SNR value.

I would like Plusnet to repeat this action.

Nope.

While it is true that Plusnet can't adjust directly the SNR target value, they can change or perform -

  • Interleaving (Off, low, high)
  • G.INP
  • Level of banding (speed capping)
  • Stability Profile
  • DLM reset

Plusnet can adjust target SNR on ADSL lines, but not on VDSL (FTTC or SOGEA).

The only SNR change Plusnet can order from Openreach is a "DLM Reset" which initially takes your SNR back to 6.0dB, but then leaves the Openreach automatic DLM to find your connection's speed/SNR balance point - so you are likely to end up where you are now after a few weeks.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

That's exactly what I want them to do. More stability at slightly less speed.

@outcast - Oops! My post overlapped yours but my desired outcome remains.

Your line SNR is controlled automatically by Openreach DLM (Dynamic Line Management), which on VDSL lines (i.e. FTTC and SOGEA) no ISP is able to request a specific SNR for a customer.

However, ISPs can specify a change in "Stability Profile", which can alter how aggressively DLM reacts to short term poor line conditions, and limit how low the SNR can go.

For further reading have a look at the "Stability Levels" description on Kitz, from which the table of settings is shown below -

Stability Profile levels.png

By default, Plusnet VDSL lines are provisioned on "NGA Profile (FTTC)" = "Speed"

which on the assumption that the line can handle the faster speeds, the target SNR can go as low as 3dB.

@Madeleyite  you should ask @Marsh  (or call Plusnet support), to change your "Stability Profile" to "Standard"

and see whether that improves thing for you.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

@Marsh - As per post 23 can you make my broadband connection more stable by changing my NGA profile to 'Standard' please?

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

Hey @Madeleyite

I have just placed the order to change the option to standard. It should be completed within 1-2 working days at the most.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

@Madeleyite

It will be interesting see what the new data is for the following after the change

Data rate,10.0 Mbps / 60.7 Mbps
Maximum Data rate,10.0 Mbps / 62.9 Mbps
Noise margin,6.2/3.9
Line attenuation,8.9/19.2
Signal attenuation,8.9/20.7

I will be interested to see what happens with the upload data rates !.

  • Given that @Madeleyite was previously on 40/10, has the current contract somehow been provisioned at 80/10 ? - seems unlikely, but having both Data Rate and Max Data Rate both exactly 10.0Mbps looks suspicious if really on 80/20 ! especially when the noise margin is 6.2 giving even more weight to the thought that upload rate is being clamped.

  • Both rates at 10.0Mbps seems wrong when the router logs are showing historic rates around 7.8Mbps on current contract.

  • Then there's why was the upload rates in the log faster on 40/10 at 8.8 and 9.2Mbps, than typically 7.8Mbps on 80/20 ?

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

I had noticed the upload at 10.0 Mbps but didn't really think more as the download noise margin is a bit low at 3.9 which might  account for the stability issues, but I see what you are saying, I'd have been more suspicious with the upload reading if it was 9.999 Mbps as a SoGEA line would be 80/20

Lets see what the next couple of days bring before further comment?
