Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

The wall is a party wall so I can only be sure on my side of the wall. I have no knowledge of or control of what is on the other side.

On my side the DSL incomer runs along the top of the skirting board and the shredder power cable runs underneath the skirting board all the way from DSL entry point to the photo you see. The gap between cables is 10cm over this 1.8m distance. The shredder is the only device (on my side of the wall) along the incomer route and the distance from DSL cable to the shredder itself is 52cm.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

I ordered a shorter ADSL RJ11 cable as per link. It has now arrived and I see that it has 4 'gold plated' pins.

When I took out the existing RJ11 cable I see it only has 2 'gold plated' pins? Should it have 4 'gold plated' pins or is the new cable the wrong type with 4 pins?

I know I could try the 4 pin cable but  thought I would ask here first in case I might damage something.

Despite some connectors having four pins, in reality only two pins are used in UK PSTN service landlines. So the only thing that matters is that they are the right two pins. If the cable works, then it is working.

@Madeleyite  -  Did you also get a short RJ11 to BT431A cable, to measure your connection using the "Test" socket ?

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

I forgot to do that. Before I order one am I right that I no longer need the DSL filter now that I no longer have a phone line? I think it is a SoGEA connection? Or do I need the DSL filter as well?

The filter is for the phone.

So I do not need the DSL filter? I'll just order the cable.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

Worth a mention the Master Socket 5c faceplate mk4 does include a RFI filter.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

Dan,

I think another contributor’s thinking was to use the test socket without a filter to eliminate the possibility of the face plate contributing to the scenario. It’s probably unlikely but always a possibility.

Correct, you DO NOT need a DSL filter on SoGEA - as long as you don't have any internal telephone extension wiring.

@Townman

Agreed, but it's not widely know that the MK4 has a RFI filter, so more for information rather than keep using it

Not having any phone extensions or landline phone eliminates the existence of RFI.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

If you replace the filtered faceplate with the just an unfiltered phone socket faceplate (like this)

that listing states "Does NOT Contain Voltage Surge Protector as this can reduce BroadBand speeds"

which might once have been useful for PSTN ring voltage spikes, but wouldn't protect against a lightning strike.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

FWIW - I've been running my modem(s) in to an unfiltered Openreach phone socket for about two years (since going SoGEA).

Removing the faceplate filter, and shortening my DSL cable to 50cm, did improve my line's attainable rate by a couple of Mbps.

Re: Frequent dropouts 25th Jan 2025

If I was not going to use any filter, bearing in mind the master socket is hidden under a desk I would not even bother with a faceplate and plug the DSL cable directly into the test socket. Removes a unnecessary connection
