Re: Intermittent Connections / Handshake

For the avoidance of doubt, what do you mean by “session initiation”? That phrase could cover a multitude of activities from xDSL negotiation at sync time, to client application connections to servers.

If it is the latter, I am intrigued to know what and how you perceive issues. I experience Netflix taking ages on start up, both of the session and starting viewing … but that I put down to poor performance of Netflix servers.

If this is application / service related, it would be helpful to know what is impacted … they could all. E on content proxy servers. Much of that stuff is on BT platforms … whose performance has been “noticeable” in the past.

Could be DNS lookup issues - you’ve mentioned a third party router - whose DNS are you using?

Plusnet’s DNS has recently been optimised so I would be surprised if their DNS service is contributing to your experience.

Re: Intermittent Connections / Handshake

It's client application to servers, not DSL sync related. The line has remained stable throughout all of this, other than my activity of swapping kit. So session initiation being the establishment of, in particular but not limited to, media streams.

Netflix streams are usually very quick to start, and I never get failures. Same with other applications / platforms I've listed in previous posts. I use the BBC as my primary testing benchmark purely because it's easy to reproduce with them - from iPlayer streams (requesting the stream several times with multiple "Something went wrong" messages before it actually starts) to trying to download a podcast from BBC Sounds (just sits at 0%). VPN traffic is also impacted, with several servers failing to establish their initial connections.

All are instant to establish and with 100% success when I repeat the same tests when tethered out via EE.

I've tried Plusnet's DNS servers (in fact running them now given I'm on the Hub2 and just left everything on auto), Google, Cloudflare, and the top performers I received from GRC's DNS Benchmark tool.

Are you on a fixed IP address or a dynamic one?

I’ve raised a question within the SU space.
