Need 2.4GHz to connect doorbell cam to. Advice needed on router frequencies and changes, please.

Hi.

My The Plusnet Hub One router offers both 2.4 and 5ghz frequencies, I have just got a doorbell camera that requires connection to 2.4Ghz and won't work on 5GHz.

1.  I have not succeeded in getting the doorbell to connect to my router so do I need to switch my router to 2.4GHz and switch off 5GHz or something? I don't know which frequency it is at now, I assume it's 5GHz. Perhaps it provides both at the same time, does the Plusnet Hub One router make both 2.4GHz and 5GHz available at the same time?

If it does provide both frequencies at the same time, should the doorbell currently connect without any changes being made to the router frequency? I don't want to be making changes if it isn't necessary and the connection problem therefore lies elsewhere and is not due to the doorbell needing 2.4GHz but finding only 5GHz (the doorbell app just says 'failed to connect' with no further info).

I believe I can access the router via browser (not tried that yet), select 2.4GHz, connect the doorbell then, I think, I can put the router back to 5GHz and the doorbell should still work (I am not 100% certain about any of this, though, I hope that is the case and hope I just go exactly through the same process to do it).

2.  Also, I believe, when changing the frequency, it will ask 'Sync with 2.4Ghz?', I don't know what that does or if I should select yes or no. One thing I read said No but did not say why, another thing I read didn't mention it at all.

3.  Another thing, in the instructions for accessing my router and changing to 2.4GHz, it says when changing to 2.4GHz frequency, to give it a new name. What is the current name? is it the one that shows up when my laptop is finding a WIFI signal to connect to (e.g. the Wireless SSID PLUSNET-JHXP). If it is that and I give it the same name, will all its currently connected devices still connect without me having to do anything? Do I have to give it a new/different name?

Many thanks.

Hi @Lillis
I would suggest you temporarily disable the routers 5GHz WiFi signal.
See if the doorbell will then connect to the router.
Then renable the routers 5GHz WiFi.

@Lillis

"I don't know which frequency it is at now, I assume it's 5GHz."

Unless you have deliberately disabled one of them, your router will be "broadcasting" on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz bands at the same time - that is the default.

Re: Need 2.4GHz to connect doorbell cam to. Advice needed on router frequencies and changes, please.

A trick I found the other day, you can use another smart phone as a hotspot, set it to use only 2.4 GHz at least you can in android. Call the hotspot the same SSID and password as the router.

Turn the router off, connect the phone to the hotspot (It should automatically connect if it has the same details as the router) and setup the smart devices. After they are connected turn the hotspot off and the router on and hay pesto the smart device will be none of the wiser and just connect to the router instead when it turns back on.

Turning 5Ghz off will work too but like my mesh there isn’t forced to be a way to turn off or connect to the bands individually.

Thank you.

@Lillis - Pull down the screen and hold the WIFI icon > Press back at the top > Press "Mobile Hotspot and tethering" > Press Mobile Hotspot > Press "Configure" > Here you can set the Network name (SSID), Password(WIFI key) and Band > Select 2.4Ghz > Press Save

@Lillis - No trouble. If you can’t do it or it doesn’t work the let me know and I’ll help change the router WIFI settings.
