Noisy ADSL line, now quiet but line stablised at very slow speed

Typically get 15-18 Mbps download, 1.2 Mbps upload but storms a couple of weeks ago caused a nosiy phone line for a couple of days.  Noise has now gone away but connection speed has been 3 Mbps down for a week now with SNR margin of 37 (usually 11 when connected at normal speeds).    Very few errors at this connection speed but could the line please be "reset" to see if it will sync at better speed?    This has happened before and a reset done a couple of weeks later worked previously to restore lost connection speed.

Re: Noisy ADSL line, now quiet but line stablised at very slow speed

@willcutforth   Thank you.  That doesn't seem to have done anything at all - i.e. the connection didn't even drop!  I rebooted the router to force a reconnection and it has immediately adopted the same rate (see below).  It appears to be being forced to reconnect at a slow download speed as the attainable rate has returned to its normal value now that the line noise has disappeared.

  Downstream             Upstream
Actual Rate 3071 Kbps 1023 Kbps
Attainable Rate 21684 Kbps 1024 Kbps
Path Mode Fast Fast
Interleave Depth 1 1
Actual PSD 18. 0 dB 10. 5 dB

  Near End                  Far End
Trellis ON ON
Bitswap OFF OFF
ReTx 0   0
SNR Margin 37 dB 9 dB
Attenuation 24 dB 9 dB

@jdsmith Which router are you using? Your D/S SNR margin is unbelievably high, indicating a major fault. Is your phone-line silent when doing the Quie Line Test (17070 option 2)?

Fix

@jdsmith Hiya. I've checked and your connection is banded no doubt due to the phone fault, not to say there are no underlying issues still but you won't sync above 3Mbps if you are banded at 3Mbps so I've placed a request to reset the connection, this can take 4 hours. Hope that helps you.

Lets just hope that reset reduces the D/S SNR.

Re: Noisy ADSL line, now quiet but line stablised at very slow speed

Thanks everyone, that reset has done the trick.   (Line is silent on the quiet line test)

Router stats now:

  Downstream             Upstream
Actual Rate 20833 Kbps 1163 Kbps
Attainable Rate 20820 Kbps 1164 Kbps
Path Mode Fast Fast
Interleave Depth 1 1
Actual PSD 19. 9 dB 12. 5 dB
Trellis ON ON
Bitswap OFF ON
ReTx 0   0
SNR Margin 6 dB 6 dB
Attenuation 23 dB 9 dB

Re: Noisy ADSL line, now quiet but line stablised at very slow speed

I totally understand your pessimism.   If I hadn't had this identical problem several times before in the last 5 years, I would have shared it.  It happens reliably after several days of very heavy rain:  noise appears on phone line,  multiple ADSL disconnects and speed drops until finally established a few days later with a stable slow connection and sky high SNR margin.   Water clearly gets into the system somewhere - I would get it investigated but I'm moving to FTTP imminently so it isn't worth it now.

Thanks for your interest/contribution.
