Re: Part Fibre Option

What cable grade are you using for the extension - presumably between the Master Socket and your Hub?

Re: Part Fibre Option

@jab1 @outcast  Thanks to you both for your help, I have taken the speedtest and BT Broadband Address readings which I will keep for reference should I need them if any problems after the switch.

Re: Part Fibre Option

@Richchad  so are you saying that your Plusnet router isn't directly connected to the Master Socket ? - as that will make the biggest difference to your broadband speed.

Re: Part Fibre Option

Would you care to share those results with us, @Richchad

Good point, @outcast  - which is why I asked about the 'extension cable'.

Re: Part Fibre Option

@outcast I have an extension wire from the master socket which I think is BT phone cable, it is under the wood flooring we had laid so cannot change it without ripping up the flooring, I will check what cable it is by looking at the ends at some point.

The cable runs from master socket to another BT socket at the PC location and from there via a filter which I will remove.

@jab1 Here are the readings etc...

Not sure about posting full error log as unsure what information I shouldn't disclose.

Re: Part Fibre Option

Thanks for those, @Richchad - slightly disappointing results, but reasonable given your connection figures.

There is nothing in the error log you need to worry about disclosing - in fact you shouldn't try to - it merely gives a full picture of what is happening on your connection, with no personal data.

Instead of posting your log file in this public forum, you could send it to @jab1 to analyse via <Private Message>

Re: Part Fibre Option

As I said above, there is no personal data in the log file, and posting it publicly has no security implications.

@Richchad

If you go to Event Log and select Category WAN from the drop down, this will provide the necessary information required with regards to DSL disconnections.

Re: Part Fibre Option

The MGS (and the speed estimates on the availability checker) assume the router is connected to the master socket and there are no extensions. Internal wires can significantly degrade performance.

Extensions should be twisted pairs; many (flat) phone (voice) grade cables are not going to deliver optimal performance. Extensions should be wired in series (one box to the next) not star wired (one box to many).

As a bench mark, plug the router into the master socket test port thereby removing all extension wiring. See if that delivers a higher speed. If it does, then you know what you need to address to achieve optimal performance.

Re: Part Fibre Option

Had notification from Plusnet that the switch to Fibre without telephone today

However I can still ring my old home phone and it rings, I thought it would be disconnected?

My speed is about the same as before so no problems there so far.

I notice I cannot get the BTwholesale speed checker to work, I assume this is because it was related to my home phone number?

Re: Part Fibre Option

@Richchad It sometimes takes a little while for the number to be fully disconnected - I would guess if you tried it again this time tomorrow it will have changed.

Speed checker - correct.

You need to use your connection's "BBEU" number (which should be available somewhere in your Plusnet "Member Centre")

Re: Part Fibre Option

Replying to this topic, I thought I'd just check my own BTW IP Profiles, but discovered that  https://speedtest.btwholesale.com/  seems to currently be broken ! - which is unusual as it typically works 95% of the times I've used it in the past.

I'm seeing it hang here -
