Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Hi All,

I am new to Plusnet having started with Broadband about 10 days ago. I have a Plusnet Hub Two router with FTTC. I am happy with speed and WiFi so far. The last couple of nights at about 4 or 5am my Android phone has alerted to say it had dropped WiFi. It recovers after a few minutes. I have exported the router log to Excel and can see what looks like some sort of restart at the same times.

Is this normal and should I expect this to happen regularly?

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

@Keithrevis This could be stabilisation, or OpenReach maintainence. If you attach the log to a post, maybe we can set your mind at rest.

@Keithrevis

Can you confirm a couple of things please

1) Are you using the DSL port to connect to the openreach master socket?

2) Have you got anything connected to the Red WAN port?

Thanks, @Dan_the_Van  - that log does look strange, and from what I could see, my initial thoughts appear wrong.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Hi Dan,

Yep, I use the Red WAN port to connect an Ethernet cable which runs to an old Openreach modem. The reason for this is my phone socket is on the corner of the ground floor of my house and I find for best WiFi coverage to have the ISP router on the middle floor. Hence the Ethernet cable to the WAN port.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

That is your problem, @Keithrevis - the WAN port is only for connecting the Hub on an FTTP service - you should be using one of the yellow LAN ports.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

@Keithrevis

Thanks for confirming.

With the Hub Two reporting PPP link down could be for few reasons.

1) The Hub Two has lost it's connection to the Openreach modem

2) The Openreach modem is having DSL connection drops

3) There could also be overnight maintenance occurring

@jab1

the WAN port is only for connecting the Hub on an FTTP service

Sorry but the wan port can be used to connect to a modem only device, which it currently is, an ONT is basically a Fibre Optic modem

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Hi John, is that right? I had a BT equivalent Router when I was with them and I connected it to the WAN port. The Plusnet Hub Two has worked absolutely fine with my set up in the WAN port apart from the couple of overnight glitches I referred to. I wouldnt have expected a service at all if it was an FTTP only port.

Will it connect ok if I use one of the LAN ports. I thought they were for output from the router only?

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Thanks Dan, that helps. I will continue to monitor and see if it recurs. I guess it could be stabilisation as you say.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

@Keithrevis

If you think the Openreach modem is failing then you can configure the Hub two to 'bridge mode' which makes it a modem only device (router functions and wireless are turned off)

You could then use one of the LAN ports and connect to a router of your choice WAN port.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Thanks Dan, very helpful. The Openreach modem is old though I think still functioning. I did wonder what I would do if that broke. I can do as you suggest and then buy a separate router. I have an old Asus one I could use whilst buying a newer, better one.

All this will go when I get FTTP which hopefully might be this year.

Re: Plusnet Hub Two Restarts Overnight

Fix

If you are going FTTP soon then consider buying a router which supports WiFi 6 to future proof your purchase.

Dan.
