Problem with landline only rings once

Hiya,  hope someone will be allow to advise me, for the last week the landline phone has only rang once on incoming calls. Check done by BT no problem with the line. I can make out going calls not a problem. The phone lead is in the test socket at the moment which solves the problem. When router is disconnected the phone also rings as normal. I have a Neargear DG834G v3. I have disconnected the router and reset it up. But problem stills remains
Any advice would be appreciated  Sad Sad

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

Our advice would be to try a different phone handset if you can get your hands on one. This would help rule out an issue with your phone. If that doesn't change anything then I'd be more inclined to think that it's a phone fault and as such would need to be dealt with by your phone provider (BT).

Happened to my line....  turned out to be a faulty line filter.

I could see that route going wrong. Phone engineer turns up, tries without the router plugged in, no fault found, tells you to report it to the broadband provider.

I'm still sticking by my advice jelv, trying without the router plugged in too is probably a good idea though.

Think I agree with @nozzer. If the phone ring in all sockets when directly plugged into the sockets with no router plugged in and then stop ringer when plugged into the sockets via a filter then it will point to a faulty filter.

I clearly need more coffee!
I can only advise ruling everything out you possibly can at your side @wattsy, filters, then if not the handset.

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

Hiya, appreciate the advice but why would it be a phone fault when the phone rings noramlly without the router connected in the usual socket. The only way I can get the phone and router working properly  is through the filter in the test socket.  The phones are cordless digital, I have tried another filter.. I should of mentioned that also I have been having problems connecting to the internet at times, could it be the router that is at fault and is there not a way I can test the router.  Regards

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

You need to look at your internal wiring. The master socket produce the ringing which go to pin 3 of the test socket. When extensions are wired to the removable faceplate then pin 3 have to be connected. It's normal to remove pin 3 from the extension wiring when broadband is on the line as this introduce noise of the line which affect the line speed. The reason why the phone still ring in this case is that most filters have the ringing circuit or the phone may have it.

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

I would tend to agree that if it is working properly in the test socket then it is either faulty internal wiring or a faulty faceplate.
One thing that is not clear is what is your usual socket. Is it the master or an extension socket?

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

Hiya
My usual socket is the master socket, I have three digital phones but of course only one plugged in to the phone line which is the master. So there isn't much internal wiring to go wrong is there??? So it can't be a problem with the router then???

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

If phone and router works okay in the test socket but not when you replace the faceplate what is different? Would it not suggest the faceplate?

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

Are you using any of the other sockets? If you don't need them, you can remove the wire from the back of the face plate, thus removing your extension wiring. Be aware that you will need a Krone tool to reattach the cable (well, to do it properly without damaging the connectors) if you ever want to use the extensions again.
Is it an Openreach-branded face plate? The newer ones include a ring capacitor.

Re: Problem with landline only rings once

I really am confused as the phone will work normally when put into the usual socket on it's own. The problem occurs when the router is connected. (No it is not a Openreach - branded plate.) That is why I thought the router may be the fault.  Really don't know what to do now, might try a new filter again.
I thank you for your advice.
