Question about broadband installation

If I understand correctly that the O/H pole is at the front, then the OR ONT will be installed on an internal wall at the front of the house.

Right, so the pole is at the front, as is normal practice, but for some reason the router is in the back bedroom?

Do you currently have a cable from that pole to your property?

If not, Openreach will run one at 'pole-height' to the front of your house and then down to (usually) just above your damp course and through the wall at that point, installing the master socket on a convenient wall nearby, although if you talk nice to the installation engineer, he may position it at a point more to your liking.

We are not currently connected to the telegraph pole so maybe this is hopeful. 

Our router is in the back bedroom as this is where we have our PC. Our PC isn't wireless and needs to be plugged into the router by an ethernet cable. This might be the source of the problem and why we needed so much cable!

Before I make any further comment: IF you decide to go with Plusnet as your ISP, which service will you be ordering - FTTC or Full Fibre?

Forget my previous post. I went back an re-read the thread. The OR Checker results show that an FTTP install would be via an O/H cable to the rear of the property. There must be another pole out the back somewhere.

If the back bedroom is at the rear of the house then the ONT placement would be some where near by.

As an aside, your PC may not be wireless but you can get wireless USB dongles to provide capability.

@26NearFar This thread is getting confusing, you can completely forget how Virgin connected you as that is history. A BT/Openreach connection will be different, the pictures you have posted don't tell the full story.

The first picture on message #13 show a BT connection box, is that at the rear of the house? Where are the wires heading upwards coming from? The BT checker says you have an overhead feed to the rear of the property but you say the telegraph pole is at the front. What about neighbouring properties do they have cables coming from poles to the front or back of the houses?

The large black box in the second picture in message #13 looks like a mains supply connection box with thick cable so nothing to do with the phone line.

If the full fibre connection is coming from the rear that must be the best solution to get a connection in the back bedroom. However the fibre from the pole would have to go to a customer splice point near ground level. The ONT could be mounted inside the house at this point or with some negotiation Openreach may agree to running the fibre externally up to the required entry point.

We do have a telegraph pole at the back of the property and we are connected to it. If our internet connection can come through the back of the property it would be so much easier as there would be less cable and it would not have come through our front bedroom.

If we decided to go with PlusNet we would want to go with a full fibre package if possible. As long as the connection could come through the back of the property this would make things a lot easier.

The help we've got from this forum would make us seriously consider going with PlusNet for our broadband.

@26NearFar If the current BT connection is via the rear of the property, the Full Fibre one will also be via the rear, and you should be able to negotiate the placement of the ONT (within reason), with the installation engineer.

Whether or not you go with FTTC or FTTP the OR connection would be made via the back wall of the house. This would appear to answer your original question about no extra cabling.

If you go with FTTP you may well be able to ask for the original copper cable to be removed along side any surplus cable / box on the wall - just put some gunge in tofill any holes left behind.

The FTTP cable will be brought over to the house to the same point as your current cable. It'll then be run down to ground level to a Customer Splice Point (CSP) box and then brought in. If you want it upstairs then I see no problem - the engineer will be trained to work at height and have the right equipment.

You require two power sockets - one of the ONT and one for the router.

A bit of additional information. If you look at the pole out the back you should see a Connectorized Block Terminal (CBT) aka a Distribution Point (DP) hanging from the pole. The number of ports visible indicate how may lines it can provide.
