Remote Access

I have a need to allow remote access to my laptop on a temporary basis to get some software assistance (......I understand the risks). I have been told that this facility has been disabled on my Plusnet account. Struggling to get through to Plusnet on phone to get help. Can anyone advise how I can enable remote access.

Many Thanks in advance

@Kev99

I have been told that this facility has been disabled on my Plusnet account

By whom ? its nothing to do with your Plusnet account

What software is being proposed for remote access ?

Re: Remote Access

My company IT department advice. They are trying to assist me with getting some software setup on my personal laptop and want to 'remote' onto my PC to sort it directly. They have told me they are unable to do this due to my providers (Plusnet) settings and that i should contact they to get this sorted. I am an effective novice on IT issues, so assumed what they have said is correct. I thought it might be something to do with router settings, but cannot see anything there on the subject.

Thanks again

@Kev99 complete rubbish! Ask them what settings they are referring to ?

Re: Remote Access

@Kev99

How long have you been a Plusnet customer? Many years ago Plusnet provided an additional server firewall that could be set to block unsolicited incoming traffic, a left over from the days of dial up connections. This is not available on accounts these days.

Re: Remote Access

Many years with Plusnet, but I have had the router updated to a Hub Two in the past few years. I have had a look at the router firewall settings.....It is set to default...."Allow all outgoing settings and block all unsolicited incoming traffic...." Is this what you refer to ? It then advises that I will need to use 'port forwarding' features if I was to disable this. No idea what this is all about, and it does not seem right to disable the firewall anyway? But as I inferred in a previous post, my IT knowledge is very limited.

Thanks for time to respond

@Kev99 yes that's what @Baldrick1 is referring to. You need to set it to Off, save the changes and then reboot the router.

Once you've done that, get your IT to try again, although I'm not sure what they will be able to do without some port forwarding

TBH I hadn't even considered the BB firewall as being a possibility.

There's really no reason for the BB firewall anymore, the router has a built-in one.

Re: Remote Access

@MisterW

Are you sure this is correct? looks like the Hub Two firewall is being referred to

@Kev99

There is an plusnet account based firewall which @Baldrick1 is referring to, found https://www.plus.net/member-centre/broadband/firewall probably best to set to OFF if it not already.

EDIT: can you please confirm the remote access software being used

Yes, you are absolutely correct, ignore my previous post.

@Kev99 leave the router firewall at Default

That's what comes of trying to mutli-task

Re: Remote Access

Observation.

Why would your employer want to install or setup s/w on your personal device?

Re: Remote Access

@bighairysmile Possibly because you have asked for assistance? I know I did many years ago, but actually took the machine into work.
