Looks as if this thread has now developed into two separate strands.
One - as originally launched - was the policy question of why Plusnet no longer provided a clear and up to date "service status" notification on their website and elsewhere (most people learned of the recent problem only from other third-party sources). The answer on that seems to be that this was a PR/marketing decision (misguided) and that - as @dvorak and others have now indicated - it has been referred to Plusnet staff, and queried, before, but this hasn't resulted in any change of policy.
The other more recent strand is the to-and-fro between some members with technical expertise as to whose DNS servers and where failed, and whether they were set up sensibly. Like many users, I have zero understanding of the detail of what happens under the hood or behind the scenes. But @Dan_the_Van , @Anonymous and others wouldn't need to be offering their guesses as to what might have gone wrong and why, if Plusnet had published a clear and prompt explanation of the problem and what they did to fix it...
Which brings us back to the original point: Plusnet needs to be better at notifying, informing and explaining. QED.

Quod erat demonstrandum is the final word. Will Plusnet listen?

@Dan_the_Van I wasn't trying to lecture, I was just trying to reinforce your point that both the configured DNS shouldn't go down together. Any ISP's core systems should be resilient.
@redsox9 I think the answer is definitely NO they won't listen.
@br1anst0rm I think you are correct - Plusnet needs to be better
