Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Hi Team,

Please can someone advise if they can see why my sync speed has been gradually dropping and is now about 8mb lower than it was maybe 1 year ago?

When I was running the Hub One, it would sync around 68-70Mbps with a download test speed around 63-65Mbps but now using the Hub Two it’s only sync’d at 60Mbps and has a download of around 55-57Mbps.

The BT wholesale checker for my phone number details an impacted line should be at 66Mbps. It shows my line on 26 Jan was 61.44Mbps and just now it’s at 60.70Mbps, just above the 60Mbps handback threshold.

I know it’s not much but with people working from home + kids wanting to stream, I’m sure the extra bit would be of benefit.

The line and connection itself are stable and I’m connected directly into the master socket with no phone or other lines connected to it, it’s just obvious there is a lower sync connection with the H2 vs H1.

I did have a BT HH6 in for a few months before getting the Hub 2 (due to 5GHZ issues) and did notice a slight sync drop vs the H1 but was hoping it might have improved with the new H2. I wonder if the line slowed during this time and has not recovered, I left the H2 running for about 3 weeks to see if it would increase but it has not. I hooked the H1 up today and it sync’d at 62.4Mbps so a slight increase but not like it was in early 2021.

Please can it be looked into, and if possible, the line adjusted so it’s back up to the faster sync level, I appreciate the H1 & H2 are different devices using different chipsets but would like it looked at please.

Thanks in advance.

First thing would be to post your router stats. If you don't know how to do this post here and I'm sure advice will be forthcoming.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Thanks a lot for getting in touch @Wipeout

It looks like a member of our team is in the account now. Have you called in?

Anyway, I've checked out the line this morning and speeds appear to be syncing at around 61Mbps for a while to be honest, as far back as I can see. There have been a couple of fluctuations lately but nothing major, and speeds have since revolvered.

Connections at your local cabinet and distribution pole are forever changing depending on what your neighbors are doing also, so overtime, speeds can drop slightly due to that, and general wear and tear. We have advised you to expect sync speeds of 60Mbps - 72Mbps, so if sync speeds dip below that, please let us know and we'll get a fault raised with our suppliers.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

As more people take up FTTC locally, the level of cross talk between circuits increases with a consequential reduction in sync speed.  It is all to do with the complexities of physics!

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Thanks @adam945

I had made comment to it on my renewal ticket so yes maybe someone was looking at it, I did say it would post on here for comment also.

Yes, can’t complain about the stability, that’s been fine, it’s just been gradually slowing down, there is a faint noise on the quiet line test but I don’t think it’s any different to 1 year ago.

Now I’m thinking… my neighbour had their pole to house line replace sometime last year, the pole is at the bottom of our drive and the Outreach van was sat across it while they swapped it out.

As the sync speed is sitting right on the lower limit, I guess there is not much that can be done until it goes below the threshold, it details “no impact observed” but is below the clean line threshold and the rate assessment comes up as low so maybe it’s getting worse gradually. The H1 was always up around the 68Mbps sync, only really noticed this in the last 6-12 months as it gradually went lower. Cheers again.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

@adam945  I found a screen grab with the faster H1 sync speed from May last year.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Thanks, Just hoping to catch it early if it is on a downward slope, seems to be holding just above the Impacted line threshold but below the clean line threshold. Hopefully it'll climb back up to the faster sync speeds seen last year.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Held for 29 days at 61.4mbps, reset by itself and dropped 1meg to 60.4mbps. I was hoping it may go up not down.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Those stats are little different form those you posted earlier. Just 0.3mbps slower than before at a slightly lower SNRM.

That could point to a small amount of interference on the line. I cannot recall, have you done a quiet line test? This should be done frequently.

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Nothing different noticed on the QL test.

It did jump up last week to sync just under 66Mbps but has now dropped back to 60Mbps. @adam945 can you see any reason for that jump up to 66 then back down 60? Cheers

Re: Slower sync speed Hub 1 vs Hub 2

Hiya @Wipeout, thank for getting in touch. I can certainly see the sync increased and then went back down to 60mb though looking at the data I'm unable to see why this happened.
