Speed fluctuating by 50% or more

Changed from ADSL  to unlimited fibre a couple of months ago with a new Hub2 router and estimated speed is 38 - 40 mbps . It has been consistently about 37 with an upload speed of about 9mbps  since the upgrade which is near enough , but for the last few days the highest test result has been about 36 but it's dropping as low as about 12 mbps on some tests .Tried all the usual things like testing at different times  and nothing has been unplugged or altered .It's ethernet connected speed , not wireless.

Thanks.

Re: Speed fluctuating by 50% or more

First thing to check: Is your phoneline clear? Dial 17070 (preferably from a corded phone), select option 2. Once your phone number is confirmed, there should be silence on the line except for the regular 'Quiet Line Test' message - any other noise, report a PHONE problem via: https://www.plus.net/help/report-a-problem/phone/

If the phone test passes, report a broadband problem via: https://www.plus.net/help/report-a-problem/broadband/

Let us know the result - if the tests come back as clear but you still have a problem, we need to investigate further.

Thank you.

Tried the quiet line test John .

Not sure what you would you hear? It sounded very quiet to me , no crackles buzzing  or hissing or anything .

Should be totally silent apart from the regular ' Quiet line test' message. Report a broadband fault via the second link.

@Rik13

How are you measuring the speed? Note that to determine whether this is a wireless or network problem you must test using a computer connected to the hub using an Ethernet cable.

Re: Speed fluctuating by 50% or more

Noticed in the Hub router control panel it's showing an up time of about 8 hours though I haven't disconnected ?

Re: Speed fluctuating by 50% or more

Hello I did mention in the original message that it's connected to the PC via an ethernet wired connection not wireless , it is a desk top pc not a laptop , and the upload speed is the same as it has been since the fibre was activated about 9+ mbps it's the download speed which was about 17 mbps when last checked and the sync speed in router control panel says 20mbps it said about 40 normally.

Re: Speed fluctuating by 50% or more

Just an update on this connection dropping issue .Which still appears to be happening.

First I have to say that It's been good to be able to actually speak to  real people on the phone who have answered promptly instead of a robot chat assistant like many places have these days. and engineers have called within 24 hours or so on two occasions now.

One engineer replaced the  Openreach main  box and his line tests showed all was well and the speed returned to acceptable levels, but the connection dropped our several times within the next day or so.

Another engineer came yesterday and replaced the main box again , this time with one which looks different and  has 5C MK4 on and separate sockets in the face plate for the phone and internet plugs . All his line checks were OK  and the speed was OK.  However I just looked this morning at 8AM the router has been on since the engineer left  and the network up time is showing as 6hrs 28 which I assume means the connection dropped at least once through night , and the speed is heading down from what it was yesterday.

I never had any issues with the old ADSL router (2704 type I think)   which is the only piece of wiring or  equipment  that  changed before the drop outs started   for the last month or two I've been on unlimited fibre .

While the engineer was here  I even fitted the new router cable I  bought which is now just a continuous length , about 5m  from the Hub2 to the new master socket , it now has  no extensions or connectors.

Could the router have an issue ? I've not messed with any of the settings since installation, except set the status indicator lights to only illuminate when required eg the red one comes on when the connection drops.

thanks
