Speeds keep dropping out

Hi All, this drives me crazy, every time I go away and switch off my router, I come back switch it on and for a couple of days the connection drops in and out constantly, fine for 5-10mins then drops outs and wont do anything.....drives me absolutely crazy, It will settle down after a couple of days but why.......have to use my phones internet which is quicker.

This cable connected to PC, obviously does the same on the Wi-Fi

Fibre 80mb

Feel better to just dump the fibre and buy a Wi-Fi card and use the phones internet and save myself £27.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

@eatmybogbrush

First question is are you on FTTC (Fibre) or FTTP (Full Fibre)?

Second question is why are you switching off your router? It is recommended you keep it on at all times to maintain a stable connection.

Re: Speeds keep dropping out

Agree with @bmc on this. I used to turn off my router (or `modem` as it was known way back then!) when I started with the internet and realized I didn`t need to. I leave it on 24/7 nowadays. I can`t say how much it costs to run a router per hour but I imagine it`s a tiny amount? Having just signed up for Full Fibre myself, this now needs to be plugged into an electrical socket. But then again, any router does!

Disagree! It is NOT necessary to keep a router on 24/7 in order to "maintain a stable connection". (It is an old myth - much like:  "We only ever use 10% of our brains")

There might be other reasons to do so. e.g. To keep it online for possible firmware updates.

Re: Speeds keep dropping out

Im assuming its FTTC (Fibre) as it does not say full fibre, I've turned off my routers for years without any problems, this is only started in the last year or so.

@eatmybogbrush It would be a good idea to start your own topic, as 'piggybacking' on someone else's makes it hard to follow.

I will ask the mods to split this off in this instance.

Re: Speeds keep dropping out

My apologies, @eatmybogbrush , so it is. I forgot to check the first post. In any case, as has been said above, why, if you are only away 'for a few days', why turn the Hub off - apart from anything else, every time you start it back up, you stress it, therefore possibly reducing its lifespan.

The 'maintaining connection' argument above doesn't hold much water, especially on FTTC, and firmware updates, which are not that often should happen not long after - usually overnight.

It should not do as you say in your opening post - maybe once, but not 'for a couple of days'. Which router are you using?
