Re: Static IP - Netflix and speed

Unfortunately, this problem has returned.

Once again, we are experiencing intermittent but frequent problems accessing popular domains such as Google, Amazon, and Netflix.

I discovered a thread where someone else was experiencing DNS-related issues, which appeared to be linked to a Static IP address. Unfortunately, he left PlusNet because the problem wasn't resolved: https://community.plus.net/t5/Broadband/Plusnet-gateway-and-DNS-problems/td-p/1809490/page/4

Could PlusNet Support please investigate this further? If possible, I'd prefer not to request a new Static IP address every few weeks.

Many thanks,

Pete

Re: Static IP - Netflix and speed

Hi Pete, sorry to see that you're seeing the same issue again, I can say with confidence it's very unlikely to be that you have a static IP as we changed that last month when I looked into this previously, the fact that it's static shouldn't make a difference either.

Is this affecting certain devices you're using or any/all of them?

Re: Static IP - Netflix and speed

Temporarily changing to the dynamic IP address appeared to resolve it last time, though that may have just been coincidental as the new Static IP also appeared to resolve the issue to begin with.

Unfortunately, it's all devices on our network, both wired and wireless.

Cheers,

Pete

Re: Static IP - Netflix and speed

Clichéd as it may be, I'd suggest a reboot of the router is in order before attempting to diagnose anything further.

Re: Static IP - Netflix and speed

Are the symptoms exactly  the same as last time? e.g. is Netflix content missing?

What's happening when you're unable to access these domains and are you able to share some example website addresses?

When the problem is evident, what is the output of a traceroute, and are you able to resolve the domains in DNS, both using your default DNS provider and by explicitly specifying one of the Plusnet DNS servers?

> nslookup google.com
> nslookup google.com 212.159.6.10

Do you have an alternative router you could try in place of your PFSense box to remove that from the equation?

Are there any secondary wireless access points, extenders or Powerline adapters on your network, and again, are you able to temporarily eliminate them from the equation for a period of time?

Is there any errant activity on your network that could be tarnishing the reputation of your IP address e.g. excessive outbound traffic/monitoring probes to particular destinations, running a proxy exit node etc?

Re: Static IP - Netflix and speed

Hi Bob,

The Netflix content missing last time is visible this time, but I don't know if other content is missing.

When we're unable to access the domains, the browser displays ERR_CONNECTION_TIMED_OUT. As mentioned previously in this thread, the request also times out when running a Trace Route.

A nslookup still appears to work when the problem is evident, both with and without the Plusnet DNS server specified.

There is indeed a wireless access point. The router does not give out a wireless signal, so an access point provides wireless to the household. There are no extenders or Powerline adapters. I've already eliminated everything and still experience the same issues with a direct wired connection to the router.

The only services running on our network are Uptime Kuma (monitoring local services), AdGuard Home, and Nginx Proxy Manager to allow more secure access to local services.

Many thanks for your help.

Pete
