Upstream sync fallen to below the Ofcom "Decent connection speed" of 1 mbps

My FTTP connection has never been particularly speedy but during this year the upstream sync speed has just about halved and is now stuck at 795 kbps with a 6dB noise margin.  Meanwhle the downstream sync has gone up from around 15 mbps and now achieves nearer 19 mbps with a similar margin.  Tried a new faceplate,  PN Hub 1, PN Hub 2, a Netgear and TP Link router but all yield similar slow results on the upstream sync.  Surely given the u/s sync speed is well below the Ofcom definition of a "decent connection" this ought to be handed back to OR for investigation?     Any learned thoughts?

Re: FTTP upstream sync fallen to below the Ofcom "Decent connection speed" of 1 mbps

@Rob_D I imagine you are on an FTTC, not FTTP, connection from the speeds you quote. Can you please follow the below, and we can then offer guidance?

For Community members to be able to help, information from these sites, as screenshots, posted as pictures within the topic, not as attachments:-

BT Broadband Availability Checker (obscuring your phone number), where a landline phone is no longer supplied or known use the address version BT Broadband Address Availability (obscuring your address)

BTW Performance Tester - Over a wired (Ethernet) connection if at all possible, please report the 'ADDITIONAL DIAGNOSTICS'- if it will run. This test is recommended to be performed with only one device connected.

Sight of the broadband connection status from your Hub (with the 'Username' obscured) would also be of help.

For the Hub One -

Navigate from the Home Screen to Troubleshooting > Helpdesk

For the Hub Two -

Navigate from the Home Screen to Advanced Settings > Technical Log > Information

Where the phone line is still active, it may also be a good idea to report the results of a Quiet Line Test - dial 17070 option 2 from a (preferably corded) phone. After the confirmation of your phone number, there should be total silence apart from the regular 'Quiet Line Test' announcement. Any other noise - report a PHONE fault first.

If you are unsure about any of the above, please just ask - I am happy to help.

Re: FTTP upstream sync fallen to below the Ofcom "Decent connection speed" of 1 mbps

You are almost certainly on FTTC (as jab1 suggested) as noise margins don't apply to FTTP connections.

The problem with upload speed is that Plusnet don't guarantee them at all - only the download speed has a minimum. So, in general you will only be able to get Plusnet to investigate a speed issue if the download is below the hand back value for the line, which is what Plusnet guarantee.

Your original sign up details should have provided you with a guaranteed download speed - is your current download speed below or close to that?

Re: FTTP upstream sync fallen to below the Ofcom "Decent connection speed" of 1 mbps

Hey @Rob_D

I’m sorry to hear that you’re not happy with the upstream speed of your line. I’ve run some tests and reviewed the line information. Unfortunately, it appears that the drop in upload speed over the past year is due to line degradation, as it’s a part-copper service. Openreach automatically tests the line to determine the average up/downstream speeds it can handle while maintaining a stable and reasonable service. Unfortunately, this isn’t something we can change. At this moment, I’m not detecting any faults on your line.

@Rob_D You can ignore my initial post - subsequent replies have covered the problem.

@Marsh

Sub 1Mbps upload on a 40/10 product seems extremely low. This is naff ADSL level speeds on an extremely long line all the way back to the exchange. Is there any possibility of a fault in the cabinet FTTC port?

@Townman Must admit I missed that. Would be interesting to see the OP's broadband checker results?
