Re: Peak time latency spikes

normal browsing was terrible along with streaming from SkyGO, I've now hopped onto lo0-central10.ptn-ag04.plus.net and normal service has resumed.

Shure:  Try and get back on a PTW/PTN gateway and see if your skype experience improves.

theoddbot:  Did you reboot your modem, or just disconnect and reconnect?  (try to eliminate your router wanting a reboot from the equation)

Just disconnected, my speeds were fine for about 10 minutes and now...

I'll just use my BT connection until you get this sorted as it's annoying having it work perfectly for short periods and then having to break off and spend time finding a working gateway.

And now....? Slow?  Laggy?
The traceroute doesn't really tell us anything because the end hop isn't shown.  The peak on the second hop is probably because the gateway is busy routing and responding to a traceroute isn't top priority.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Don't know about now, as you'll see from viewing my IP address I've switched over to my BT connection - I'll check again later as I don't want to switch again as it will break off what I've got running.
SkyGO, wouldn't display correctly - it was pixelated and voice was delayed, when I first switched onto ag04 it was smooth and crystal clear.
Browsing, was just slow in general.
This is the complete traceroute:

traceroute to bbc.co.uk (212.58.241.131), 64 hops max, 52 byte packets

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Shure - I've been on the same gateway as you since yest and only had problems around 21:30 last night. Not used my connection at all today but my tbb graph looks "quiet".

Re: Peak time latency spikes

AndyH - I don't quite understand it myself.  TBB graph looks OK but you can see from the pingtest that I was having problems.  Skype was awful and I was getting a fair amount of lag.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Your graphs look pretty active though for the majority of the day. Are you using your connection as much and at the times TBB shows? If not, it's probably worth running a virus scanner like Eset (http://www.eset.com/us/online-scanner/) and anti-malware scanner like Malwarebytes (http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free) to check nothing untoward is running on your machine/s.
Have you tried setting up some form of QoS on your router (if you can) to prioritise services like Skype etc?
There is a difference with TBB graphs and pingtest.net - TBB pings your router whereas pingtest.net tests from a machine inside your internal network. I found pingtest.net unreliable at times so stuck with command prompt and ping/pathping commands.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

My son likes to stream video, which is why the line looks constantly active.  Today we noticed some buffering which is unusual as it's been fairly reliable for a while now.
I did the pingtest check after I ran into problems with Skype, as I wanted an instant check which TBB won't give me, and the results seemed to confirm that there were problems on the line at the time.  Also, the BT speedtest (part 2)  refused to complete, and doesn't that also go from the router (could be wrong here)?
Just FYI, all tests (and Skype) are carried out from a PC which is wired via ethernet cable to the router.
scratches head
edit: forgot to mention, don't think my router (Netgear DG834PN) has QoS.

Re: Peak time latency spikes

I don't know what's going on with my line lately but this can't be normal.  Are there network / gateway issues this evening?

Re: Peak time latency spikes

Everything seems fine tonight.  You've got some sort of fault, fairly convinced of that.
