Error with notification count

When I arrived on the site this morning I was greeted with this:

I looked through the pages on posts then checked my notifications. But there was nothing new, well nothing obvious and this had the effect of clearing the count. But on coming back I see it's returned.

Any thoughts?

I had exactly the same, 101 notifications - but nothing new.

So it's another new day and the 101 Notifications are back -

Looking at the detailed view of my notifications I see this -

But if I click on "My notifications (101)", there are no new forum posts to view !, and the count gets reset -

Even when you get rid of them they come back the next day.

It's no longer a notification of new posts. It's a notification of all the posts you have replied to over the past several months.

How did you come to that conclusion ?

If that was true, what are the chances that @Mook and I have both replied to exactly 101 posts ?

besides if I go back 101 replies that I've posted then that date would be 19th March 2019 which doesn't seem to be a special date or anything.

In my case at least, it's the total number of notifications received, not the number of replies over a given period (I've counted them!)

By counting them. No I do not have 101. And I said several not seven.

And it seems to have cleared up for me at the moment. Good that means no more confrontational replies.🐶woof

I'm seeing it for the first time this morning.

I saw it too for the first time today - 101 reported - just two new notifications.

Any correlation to anything is pure coincidence.

I've noticed the same for the last few days, apart from my number is 42 ! (I checked, 42 is the total number of entries in my notification screen).

Going into notifications show no real new ones, the count then disappears, and comes back the next day.

It's curious how, though people have different notification number errors, the number for them seems to stay the same. Mines always twenty something. I can't help wondering, considering the timing, if these phantom notifications have anything to do with the now phantom general chat board.

If that's the case the cure is simple, just reinstate that board.😀
