Lots of places - Blogs for instance, grey on white. Forum index's pink on white. These wishy washy colours are not easy to see if your eyes are not 100%

I have the feeling that your monitor has its brightness set too high and the colours are being washed out on your screen.
The pink is in fact the Plusnet purple and the grey on white I can't find at all.
Try turning the brightness down and see if it improves. Report back on what kind of screen you have and its age.

I found one now.
Here <http://community.plus.net/forum/index.php?action=unread> there is an icon and white text on a very pale gray bar at the right hand side.
I think the text says'Mark all as read'.

Before you all rush off and change the colours of the site spare a thought for a large part of the male population who are to a greater (me) or lesser extent colour blind.
I am classed as Deuteranopia (1% of the males) colour blind, you can read up on what I see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_blindness#Dichromacy
(and for those who ask traffic lights are ‘red, yellow and white’ or that is how I see them.
So please from my point of view not too many reds and keep to primary colours where you can  :).

My eyesight isn't 100% and after reading posts on here for the last 10 minutes or so, I'm beginning to see faint bands across the screen. This is being caused because the whole layout is far too bright (too much white mainly). IMO, the background needs toning down a little.

I will actually just mention regarding this that I do feel there's the possibility some people's monitors are too bright. However, when I say 'bright' I am not referring to brightness in terms of the colour values displayed on screen, but in terms of the actual light produced by the monitor - i.e. the strength of the backlight. Particularly in the case of LCDs, their maximum brightness tends to be far brighter than is necessary in normal working conditions.
For what it's worth, I have my monitor carefully adjusted/calibrated for photography work, and I can say that whilst I find all the white here causes problems differentiating posts etc., it isn't actually physically hard for my eyes to look at; if people are finding it is, maybe turning the backlight down a bit would help. Plus, it'd extend the life of your monitor too.

I don't think that it's just the brightness of the monitor as I still find it difficult to distinguish between posts.  Looking at the colour values, in Adobe Photoshop CS2, for the light purple background it is virtually white having the following values:
H: 0%
S: 0%
B: 97%
R: 248
G: 248
B: 248
#: F8F8F8
This image sample makes the distinction between posts alot clearer yet is not overpowering.
The colour values for this are
H: 0%
S: 2%
B: 94%
R: 240
G: 235
B: 235
#: F0EBEB

I have a CRT monitor and I'm not too sure I understand what you mean by backlight. I've just had a look at the various monitor settings and I can see brightness, contrast and color select. I note in the color select settings I have the option of 9300K and 6500K. It was set at 9300K and I've now changed it to 6500K and my screen is now much duller (less bright) than it was before although the actual colours don't seem to have changed any. Is this what you mean by backlight. After keeping this setting for a few minutes, I must admit that it's much easier on my eyes and I'll keep it at that for a while and see how I like it.

There is no pink/purpleness in those values just a faint diminution of the standard white.
Your suggested slightly darker grey has its red value slightly higher thus changing the hue.

Yes, the colour difference between posts isn't strong enough.  Mitch will take a look next week.  It's fine on most CRTs I've seen it on, but it's far too subtle on this laptop LCD I'm on now.
