How to I add an image to a private message

I must be missing something.
Writing a private message
Click on insert an image.  The system then inserts two "img" tags
am I then meant to put the pathname to the image on my hard disk in between the tags?

If you want to include an image in a PM you first have to upload it to somewhere and then between the tags you put the URL of the image. The option to attach images as you do when making normal posts doesn't exist.
A trick I have used in the past is to find a very old post of mine that I don't think anyone will look at, edit it and attach the image, view the image and use that URL in the PM. I've also done the same thing for the image in my signature.
