Oddity

Screenshot 2024-11-19 230105.jpg

When trying to read contributions to "General chat" I find that I have had to sign in (again). Despite (apprently) being 'signed in'.

This is after reading contributions on other forums when I wasn't signed in, but signed in whilst browsing through these.

Could be browser related? (Firefox)

Likewise

Re: Oddity

I'm thinking tabbed browsing and interactions between the tabs, cookies and server-side code. It works OK in some tabs, in a restricted number of tabs it doesn't. Which then possibly comes back to code differences on the server side?

FWIW - FF 132.0.2

I have blown away FF installs and re-installed, yet it persists. There again, blowing away FF sometimes doesn't blow it all away.

It is classed as an irrintant here.

Re: Oddity

Eventually...

It appears that all areas of the forum are available in 'read-only' mode (available to read without signing in), with the single exception of General Chat. That was my original thought. I don't keep cookies, which others may do and thus the 'problem' was never apparent to them.

Re: Oddity

IIRC this was a 'security' feature which stopped the GC pages being trawled by search engines, along with new forum users having to have made a certain number of posts in other fora before even seeing GC, introduced several years ago to stop people such as a particular troll who kept signing up under various different names.

S/he caused ructions in GC, trolling in particular @Minivanman , and the usernames and avatars used were generally political, and/or race, and/or muslim related.  The names/avatars used were often blatantly obvious, but it was not easy to convince the mods and forum admin of this, although eventually the changes mentioned above were implemented.  ISTR one particular name was 'MiniWoke' with an image of a Mini Moke facing the opposite way to Minivanmans avatar which gave the appearance of the two of them going head to head in the 'Who's online' avatar line up section at the bottom of this page.

Re: Oddity

A minor correction to my post above;

The troll in question used a slightly more subtle version of the username I suggested, it was actually 'MinnieWoke'.

Re: Oddity

Well, that also fits within the parameters of the technical implementation.

And they call this 'social media'?
