Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

Hi IanSn. Unfortunately a number of these authentication errors have appeared as a consequence of the bugs that appeared later on Friday morning. Let's hope those bugs are fixed soon as they are unfortunately affecting basic usability.

Hi everyone,

I've had a message from Lithium:

We have a change scheduled to be deployed to production in a few hours which should resolve any occurrences of seeing that JavaScript error. We'll follow up with you after to see if those issues have indeed ceased.

Could any of you reading this please do me a huge favour:

  1. (if possible) close any open Community tabs/windows and clear your cache for this site.
  2. Post below and mention me if you experience the yellow Javascript authentication error (shown above) with a brief explanation of what you were doing at the time, so we can try and reproduce it.
  3. Post if you still experience the other Javascript issues (fly out menu, drop downs etc)

I'm hopeful that their update has fixed at least one of these issues... But as I don't know the exact nature of the change I'd highly recommend clearing the cache as per step 1, to ensure you benefit from any changes and to help us troubleshoot any ongoing issues.

Really appreciate your patience while we resolve these issues, I know it must be frustraiting.

Cheers,

Matt

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

Also posted (by me) elsewhere but just in case these observations help in any way:

This (fly-out menu issue) is so frustrating. Working perfectly on my PCs - I do't recall a single failure.  Working perfectly on my Android phone (very few, if any, failures previously).  Now, on my Raspberry Pi it can work but mostly doesn't - if it doesn't work I can click my username 20 times and I can pretty much guarantee I'll get my profile page 20 times, if I close the browser and re-open it, it always seems to work correctly the first time, sometimes OK the second time then usually back to not working correctly at all.

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

I don't know if this is 'new' but I've just had it (repeatedly) a couple of times and I'm fairly sure I saw the same thing yesterday:

If I click the 'back' button in my browser after viewing a topic navigated from 'unread topics' I return to unread topics (updated to reflect that the one I've just returned from has been read so doesn't appear) - I get the same if I select 'Unread Topics' from the fly-out menu, so far - so good.  Just now, returning to 'Unread topics' after posting shows the topic I just posted at the top of the list (OK maybe someone else just posted) so I click the little number to see the update(s) and guess what?  That's right, no new posts since the one I just made.

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

I had to stop and think about that one. I've seen similar but not specifically or necessarily fromUnread topics. I think I'd call this a quirk rather than a bug. Did you return to the post after posting? I've noticed that on the occasions that I didn't do that, they showed up as Unread. If I returned to the post immediately after posting they didn't show up as Unread.

It could well be as simple as that, I'll try to 'take notice' of what I'm doing next time. Wink

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

So far, touch wood, head and etc. I've not seen an authentication error of any type and I've marked several posts & threads Read and Unread etc. or signing out.
But the Fly-out and drop-down menu issues are still there.

I've not been that active today, but I also haven't seen an Authentification error (so far!)

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

As of just over an hour ago the issues I mentioned in message #62 are still present as are the Fly-out and Drop-down menu issues (remembering that they are all intermittent). And as mentioned in my last post above, no more authentication issues seen so far.

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

Still the same problems (with the fly-out menu) on the Raspberry Pi.

If I go to http://www.javatester.org/javascript.html it reports

JavaScript   IS WORKING   in your web browser
Your web browser supports JavaScript version 1.7

The User Agent string for your web browser is:

Mozilla/5.0 (Macintosh; ARM Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/538.15 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/538.15 Version/6.0 Raspbian/8.0 (1:3.8.2.0-0rpi27rpi1g) Epiphany/3.8.2

I also got the first (that I can recall) occurrence of the same problem on my home PC Windows 10 Professional 64 bit running Chrome browser but can't currently recreate on my office PC, also Windows 10 Professional 64 bit running Chrome browser.

Charles Lutwidge Dodgson couldn't have written it better.  "Curiouser and curiouser" Huh

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

Apologies if this has been mentioned but there has been a lot of noise generated regarding the Username / Avatar fly-out, I honestly have not read it all. But for what it may be worth I have just checked the unread posts and marked them (successfully) as read. I then thought about making a comment on a previous post so I clicked my user name and out came the popup and stayed. I then clicked on my post count and it took me to it. From there I viewed a post, realising it wasn't the correct one I re-clicked my username / avatar link. But this time the popup appeared but only briefly but more noticeable was the fact that the header above the counters was empty!

This may or may not be relevant, but I thought I'd mention it, just in case.

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

That sounds similar to my experience where, in a new browser window, the pop-up menu (usually) works the first time but never subsequently.

Details not exactly the same but may well be related at the bug level.

One more to add to the list @mtrinder, just went to mark a post I'd just read as 'Mark as New' and got Authentication error - the one that suggests Javascript isn't enabled (I've since achieved it with out error and with any other changes)

I have been trying to replicate this but it is all working for me. The described issues surrounding the 'jumping to the top of the page' or 'switching between Rich text, html and preview not working' and issues with the flyout are all indications of a problem with the javascript. @mtrinder mentions that it was the same for him but we are both running the same browsers. At the time, it didn't work according to the post history but it works fine for me right now. I wonder if the jquery library had not loaded properly from where it is hosted.

@Anotherone and @mtrinder, can you guys try this again and see if you are still having the issue? I am just wondering if this is an intermittent bug that has been fixed by Lithium in the background since launch.

Re: Priority - Forum bugs have appeared

@jaread83 as mentioned in an earlier post, the authentication error issues seem to have stopped. The rest are still there.
