At the end of the day, most of us would agree with your sentiment.

A low cost change would be to change the thumbs-up button alt/tool tip text to read "Click here to like/give thanks to this post", and that on the number to read "Total likes/thanks this post has received. Click for more details".

Leave thanks in place elsewhere on the forum.
