What on earth is going on here?

Re: What on earth is going on here?

@jaread83 - Yes, everything is now in sync, but that of course does not explain why it went out of sync in the first place so here's another thought. These forum are load balanced so could there be a delay in the replication or is one (or more) of them out of sync?

Re: What on earth is going on here?

We raised a support ticket with Lithium about this earlier. We will update this thread when we have more information.

Re: What on earth is going on here?

I was showing as 36 thanks in the general chat forum but this dropped to 34 ?

Do you get marks deducted for inappropriate posts ?

Just kidding, but on a more serious note do we really need a thanks column if it is not accurate ?

I know knothing about coding or website design but would have thought the simpler it was the less problems there would be ?

Re: What on earth is going on here?

I think the 'Thanks' feature is helpful as a background facility for Admin / Mods to support things like the ranking system (though I'm not very enthusiastic about that!).   If it were to disappear as a generally reported on item, it would free some space on the Community landing page and IMHO not be much missed.

I believe it shows thanks given in the last 30 days, if you click in to it you can view thanks for different time ranges Wink

Re: What on earth is going on here?

Thanks thanks/likes isn't that bad and serves an extra metric to measure how much users engage with everyone in a community. I personally quite like it but then I am a fan of websites like Reddit, YouTube and Facebook where these types of things have become the norm.

Re: What on earth is going on here?

@gleneagles Shutter spotted that one a couple of months ago after his thanks count went down! As has been mentioned, the default count setting is for the last 30 days.

Personally I think the default should be at least "The last year" or "All time". I really see no reason why it should not be "All time".

Re: What on earth is going on here?

If it was set to be 'all time' then the same users would dominate the top of the leaderboards with no way of any other users being able to make it on the board. Think of it as if we were using the all time post count as the metric here - what if there is a user who has 20,000 posts but then one day left, never to be seen again? That user would be on the leaderboard for a very long time and there is no way anyone could possibly catch up with that unless they posted everyday for a few years. The leaderboard panels are supposed to be a way to encourage continuous engagement rather than display the top users all the time. I have seen some new users come along and get chatting with the veteran members here, I would like to think that they have a chance to get on the leaderboard at some point for their efforts.

We can certainly change the timeframe of the thanks panel but I don't think setting it to be 'all time' is fair on anyone else apart from those top users who have built up a long standing score with no way to top it for anyone wanting to be more engaged in the community.

What I could do for the future is create a page for all the top stats of all time across the entire community for solutions, posts, thanks and daily post frequency? That could be a good idea going forward. I think SMF had a page specifically for this.
