Re: Another gmail rejection issue

@MisterW no apologies necessary, I always appreciate bluntness. However your comment suggests that "CTRL+C & CTRL+V" has altered the text I copied from @Townman  post.

I have other things to do for now but I pursue the process of entering an MX record.

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

@Lordwotsit, you may want to re-read @Townman's post, because if you have entered

v=spf1 a mx include:_spf-internal.plus.net include:_spf-internal2.plus.net ~all

in the right field as you say in you're earlier post, then you haven't followed what he has said.

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

This is true, although in mitigation I did ask for step by step instruction as sometimes a paragraph of written text can be easily mis-understood. @Townman I thank you for your patience.

Interestingly the instructions on the Plusnet page for DNS configuration state priority between 0 to 65535.

I've re-entered the text as stated, without quotes, and we shall await the outcome. fingers crossed that we will be able to once more send emails to our Gmail friends Smiley

@Lordwotsit and that is correct for a 'real' MX record which could be used to route incoming email for the domain. However this isnt a real one, its purely a dummy record used as a trigger for the script hence the priority 999999.

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

@Lordwotsit

  1. A SPF record is a TXT record not a MX record
  2. Setting a SPF record on a HOSTED domain requires a MX record

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

@MisterW  Which is my point about making sure instructions are precise. Yes, the information may be there but it has to be presented in a way that is understandable. It also requires that adequate explanations for variables are detailed enough. Only supplying partial information almost always leads to mis-understandings.

Thank you for your assistance. Smiley

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

Having applied the MX record, with the correct right field variable, it appears that Gmail is no longer bouncing my emails. Why Plusnet support desk couldn't make this fix clear when I initially rasied a ticket beggars belief.

Thank you for all the help and patience shown.

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

With all due respect. @Townman provided very clear instructions with a screen shot of the text that needed to be entered and the places it needed to be entered.

Really don't see how much simpler it could have been.

"It also requires that adequate explanations for variables are detailed enough. Only supplying partial information almost always leads to mis-understandings."

Your Lordship, I would respectfully suggest that all you need to do is follow the instruction as provided and not to doubt the advice given.  The information is as full and complete as it needed to be for the task at hand.

How much more precise do you think might this be please?

On the basis that your account ALREADY has a hosted domain, go to Manage Account -> Manage Your Domains -> Configure domain name ... and create an "Additional DNS records (Advanced)" as follows...

Screenshot 2023-01-25 155752.png

Would micro step by step have helped, such as...

  1. Navigate to the Plusnet user portal https//plus.net
  2. Log on to the portal using your Plusnet account and password
  3. Go to Manage Account (outline of a man on the top row)
  4. Go to Manage Your Domains (scroll down the screen to the bottom) ***
  5. Select Configure below the relevant domain name
  6. Under Additional DNS records (Advanced) select Configure DNS Records
  7. Under Create a new DNS record for domain name
    1. Left field: Leave Blank
    2. Type: MX
    3. Pri: 999999
    4. Right field: please-add-spf-records
    5. Click ADD
  8. Job done - log out - might take up to 6 hours to come into effect

... which many will find patronising!

*** Elsewhere there has been mention of the dreaded obscuring of the bottom of this page by the black footer (known portal bug 'fixed' by resizing the browser window) but you have not mentioned this as being an issue and I would not expect to need to mention every possible foible one might encounter in following the correct advice.

As for support not being able to advise of this - well this is not a supported method.  It is a "works today facilitation" brought about by the SU's engagement with the business.  Further given the machinations with Gmail, there is no assurance that this will fix GMAIL's SYSTEM's PROBLEMS.  We are seeing cases where it appears that even where all of Gmail's unilateral enforcement of non-mandatory protocols has been complied with, Gmail are still refusing to deliver email to non-payers.

Does it not strike anyone as perverse that those who pay for their Gmail service do not encounter these issues?  Make no mistake, this is a Gmail created issue, impacting not just Plusnet users but many email service users.  Do the research, the internet is littered with such reports.

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

@Townman Nope, just 7a,b,c,d would have sufficed for me, like I said I'm not completely inept. However there might be some people who would appreciate a very detailed step by step. I do think your last attempt was much better. It was possible to see the wood as there weren't as many trees in the way.

Anyway, thanks again and good bye!

Re: Another gmail rejection issue

I have added the max record on Sunday, but it’s still not working today. I am sending from my you@domain.co.uk address and gmails bounce straight back with

Reason: A message that you sent to the following recipient could not be delivered due to a permanent error. ** The remote server ?? responded with: ** xxxxxxx@gmail.com ??:?? This message was created automatically by mail delivery software on the server .

What else can I try?
