Another slow email problem

I've noticed a recent query from a member who has had problems loading up emails. I am suffering similar issues on my Mac, iPads and iPhones whilst at home and connected to my Plusnet router. The issues totally go away when I'm elsewhere or on data on the phone.

I do stream quite a bit at home (Netflix, AppleTV+, Amazon etc) and do a few downloads. My normal download speed is fine but emails are a constant annoyance. Incoming mail takes a while to load content and once one goes off a particular message, it often has to reload.

I use Apple's own email client but also have some mail coming in from older Gmail accounts but not much.

I saw on a previous thread that it's useful to attach Hub details so have done so.If anyone more expert than me can offer advice it would be much appreciated,

Thanks,

John

Re: Another slow email problem

The DS SNRM is a little high - is there noise on the line?

Broadband is not going to work well if the "phone" line is not working properly.

Please perform a quiet line test - dial 17070 select option 2 using a phone plugged into the test socket behind the face plate of the master socket (ideally this should be a corded phone). The line should be silent. A noisy phone line (or no dial tone) will have a marked adverse impact on the performance of broadband.

If the line is noisy or there is no dial tone, then a PHONE LINE fault needs to be raised with your phone provider. If this is PlusNet, you can report a fault via a mobile telephone using the button below.

You might try raising the server timeouts (if configurable) to 2 minutes.

You might want to check on webmail (https://webmail.plus.net) to see if there is an email with a large attachment waiting to be downloaded.  These can sometimes block effective transfer speeds.

I use the Apple email clients too - sometimes they can be sluggish compared to my laptops.

Re: Another slow email problem

Hi Townman and thanks for your reply.

I haven't got a landline phone (we just use mobiles these days) but I'll see if I can borrow one over the weekend and do the suggested test.

May I just ask though, if there was a problem on the line would I not have issues streaming and downloading? Every time I do a speed test, it shows pretty well maximum speeds for my particular contract so I didn't think there was actually an issue regarding that aspect and it's rare I have any streaming issues..

I'd add to my original post that Safeguard is turned off as is 'Protect Mail Activity' in my Apple Mail preferences.

It may be a day or so before I can get hold of a "real" phone but as soon as I do, I'll try the test.

Thanks again,

John

The line test from our side is showing clear but I will see what the broadband one does for you!

Re: Another slow email problem

Hi and thanks,

Not sure if you've done anything but emails seem to be loading up better this morning. I had another look at the 'Information' screen which doesn't show a lot of difference but attached anyway.

I am having huge difficulty getting hold of a landline phone from family, neighbours etc as everyone seems to just use mobiles these days. Can any further relevant checks be done from Plusnet's end?

I'll keep an eye on the email loading up situation over the next couple days and report back.

Thanks,

John
