Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

Ok there then.

Next test, computer.
Try telnet login to smtp server on the problem computer. I forget the windows version steps, they shouldn’t be too complex though.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@RPMozley

Thanks again but I'm afraid I'm totally out of my depth with this.  Activated telnet OK and can get into command mode.  I think I have to put in host name and port to connect and then check PN host and port..  My problem comes with my port numbers.  If I do netstat -a about 30 numbers come up after the host name mostly 5 digits but some zeros or 4 digit ones.  I've tried to connect with many but they've all failed.  How do I know which one I should be checking?  Am I looking at the right thing?  As I can email through Gmail SMTP presumably something is working?

The error message I get when I sent emails is "Login to server relay.plus.net with username xxx@xxxxxxxx.plus.com failed"

and then "Sending of the message failed.Unable to authenticate to Outgoing server (SMTP) relay.plus.net. Please check the password and verify the 'Authentication method' in 'Account Settings | Outgoing server (SMTP)'.

This sounds to me as if my port at least is open.  I'm just so bewildered.

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@jannic Taking a step back have you checked that you have the basic settings such as the port set correctly?  https://www.plus.net/help/email-guides/how-to-set-up-plusnet-email/

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@Baldrick1   Yes I've checked that and lots of variations.  Basically all I initially changed was the pw. None of the settings which were all correct.  But I've tried many different things as you'll see in the thread. Thanks

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@jannic
In that error message it’s indicating that you are using full email address for username, is that how you have set it up?

The correct way is in this format:
User: account name (only, not email address)
Pass: account password

For extra mailbox.
User: account+mailbox
Pass: mailbox password
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@RPMozley

The account has always been set up with email address + pw.  I have tried several times with user name only (and again just now) and I get the similar message "Login to server relay.plus.net with username xxxxxxxx failed".

For the second box do you mean User name space second email address?  If so that doesn't work either.

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

No, not a space an actual ‘+’ and then the mailbox name only.

So as an example, take one account called “dogs” and an extra mailbox called “cats”
The username to use would be:
“dogs+cats”
The password will be the “cats” mailbox password.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@RPMozley

Presumably cats is part of cats@plusnet.com

I have tried it as dogs ie username+cats

Also as dogs+cats@plusnet.com

Login fails with both unfortunately.

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

Hi there, if your username was "cats" and the mailbox was "dogs" the email address would be dogs@cats.plus.com for example and the right username to log in with would be cats+dogs

I hope that makes sense!

@adamwalker

Except the user name was dogs and second email cats.  Otherwise I did precisely what you suggested.and it failed.  As does normal dogs login.

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

Ok seems like you’ve tried everything.

Let’s try a different approach. Is there any antivirus software running on that computer? Maybe there is something blocking emails or scanning outgoing email.
That's RPM to you!!

Re: Changed password now no SMTP connection with Thunderbird

@RPMozley

Yes I have anti virus and a firewall.  Turned both of them off temporarily but made no difference.

Thanks
