Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Are you authenticating by account name or email address?

Should work with email address.

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

I am authenticating via email address, the last email I received was 6am yesterday, after that nothing.

I also tried  a "telnet <domain name> 143, then manual did a "001 LOGIN <username> <password)

I get "001 NO [AUTHENTICATIONFAILED] Authentication failed."

Same results on 143 and 993.

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Although well documented, that is the hard approach to running this diagnostic.  Try this...

curl.exe -v imap://mail.freenetname.co.uk -u userID

Replace "userID" with your email address. At the prompt, enter your password which is NOT echoed back to the console.  Press enter.

Is the email address the primary on the account or a secondary?  Is the email address of the form a.b@...

🙂 the curl is easier for sure... same net result though, unfortunately...

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Hi David,

Great, you look like you know how to kick tyres.  Can you try the other servers too please?

Brand: Freenetname
Preferred userID: Address
Encryption supported: No

  • IMAP: mail.freenetname.co.uk port: 143
  • POP3: mail.freenetname.co.uk port: 110
  • SMTP: smtpmail.freenetname.co.uk port: 587
curl.exe -v imap://mail.freenetname.co.uk -u userID
curl.exe -v pop3://mail.freenetname.co.uk -u userID
curl.exe -v smtp://smtpmail.freenetname.co.uk:587 -u userID

These should all work with userID = email address.

Where ""should" does not work, then one needs to explore potential causes ... that is from experience, speculate until something which matches the current experience is identified.  There are reports elsewhere of POP3 and IMAP working but not SMTP, thus one needs to identify why this is not working for YOU.

With some of the brands switching to the proxy servers where account-name worked, that has needed to be changed to email address.  There is always the possibility that is not consistent across the servers, so do try both please.

Also are you connecting over the Plusnet network?  That can make a difference.  Is there a VPN involved>

Finally does the email address contain any of ".", "-" or "_"?

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Hi,

smtpmail.freenetname.co.uk connects fine, I can send an email via smtp using curl (it does not arrive but that may be symptomatic of the other issues) but I don't get any issues e.g.

< 250 2.1.5 Ok
> DATA
< 354 End data with <CR><LF>.<CR><LF>
} [196 bytes data]
* upload completely sent off: 196 bytes
< 250 2.0.0 Ok: queued as 1C92C10000E891BC
102 191 0 0 102 196 0 414 --:--:-- --:--:-- --:--:-- 417
* Connection #0 to host smtpmail.freenetname.co.uk left intact

Thanks,

David.

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

I can log into my master freenetname with those curl commands, and I created another mailbox (on Madasafish website) but could not log into that with same commands (same as the one that is failing), so it looks like an issue with additional mailboxes.

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

I have a similar problem. I cannot access my mailboxes that were created with globalnet (madasafish) years ago. Everything was fine on Monday 28th April but not the following day. I can access them using webmail but not with any client on a PC or mobile device. For the last n years I have been accessing using user@domainname and a password but suddenly this all stopped working on the 29th April. Plusnet have been no help, because I can get to the mailboxes using webmail and they will not help with 'third party' clients despite the fact that the problem has obviously been created at the server end.  I can log in to the root mail box OK but not my created user mailboxes.  This is a real show stopper for me

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Yes, super annoying.

If you do a tracert on mail.<your domain> then you get this

Tracing route to mail.legacy.enmail.co [91.204.208.192]
over a maximum of 30 hops:

1 9 ms 7 ms 7 ms 192.168.68.1
2 37 ms 64 ms 66 ms 192.168.1.254
3 16 ms 12 ms 23 ms 251.core.plus.net [195.166.130.251]
4 12 ms 9 ms 11 ms 217.32.25.136
5 12 ms 13 ms 14 ms 109.159.255.40
6 8 ms 10 ms 12 ms peer3-et3-1-4.redbus.ukcore.bt.net [194.72.16.186]
7 * * * Request timed out.
8 23 ms 15 ms 11 ms lon-tel-01c.voxility.net [5.254.78.150]
9 14 ms 11 ms 13 ms 5.254.1.34
10 13 ms 12 ms 13 ms 91.204.208.192

It is routing to the plus.net core firewall, so it is defo a plus net issue, since it's on their domain.

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

If you are using Thunderbird then you can revert to

mail.madasafish.com, port 143

smtp.madasafish.com, port 587

It stays it is unencrypted, but it works.

It doesn't work from the Gmail app on Android and Apple email because I assume that requires encryption.

Maybe a workaround until plus net decide to pull their finger out.

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Not sure if this is connected but as of today (30th April) I cannot send emails from my freenetname account - it keeps asking me for the username/password (pre-filled) again and again.

I have tried resetting the router (access via a Vodafone dongle card) and changing the port from 587 to 25 but to no avail.

I can however log in and out of my online webmail account.

Can anyone help me?

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Hi David,

I have obtained a FNN test account and ran all the combinations.

Your successful SMTP test - was that connected to the Plusnet network or another?

Your reference to secondary mailboxes on MAAF - do you have a domain name?

Re: Freenetname email not working on IMAP since 29th April

Hi David,

Really appreciate those clarifications. They look like two key points of consideration in the discussions.

I’ll ask for another test account.
