Globalnet email stopped working

Hi

ageing and increasingly befuddled user here.

I've had my globalnet email address (account) for over 20 years (all of my contacts have and use it).  I access it through a PC-based Microsoft Outlook client.

It has suddenly stopped working: no emails sent or received for two days (including tests), which is very debilitating.

Does anyone know of any general problems?  Any ideas about fixes?   Nothing changed my end.

For reference I also have a gmail account (and an unused hotmail account) and I own about four domain names which I don't currently use at all.

Re: Globalnet email stopped working

Have you exceeded the storage allowance. 250mbps if I recall correctly.

That includes all folders, including sent items.

Re: Globalnet email stopped working

I'm pretty sure not.  I use client-based MS:Outlook, so messages are downloaded.

It has come back, now (yesterday late afternoon, actually).  I logged into webmail and discovered that any messages that had been there were archived about a month ago (because I hadn't used it for ages), so it wasn't that.

Mystery continues...

Outlook using a POP3 or IMAP client configuration?

If the outlook client was connecting to the account properly (at all) you would not have encountered the "archived due to non-use for over 90 days" scenario.

Townman

I'm sorry - I am being particularly dim.  I can't even find on my Outlook where email accounts are set and configured.

What you say sounds like a problem, even though I can and do receive and send globalnet messages through Outlook, so I'd like to fix it.  Can you help, please?

Thank you

Re: Globalnet email stopped working

Hi Bill,

Better start off by being clear about which version of "Outlook" you are using - there are a number of very different products which go under that name...

  • Proper outlook - part of Office 365 also known as Outlook 2016/9 - runs on your PC
  • Win10/11 mail - not the best of email client by any measure
  • Outlook.com as accessed using a web browser

For the first, account settings can be found under FILE - select the account in the top box - then in the account settings drop down - select server settings.  That will report either IMAP or POP3.

Re: Globalnet email stopped working

Thanks.

I'm using 'proper' Outlook (albeit Outlook 2010, and with a 2.8Gb .pst file!).

It says POP/SMTP.

Mail is working now, but is there anythings else I need to do?

Re: Globalnet email stopped working

Given your description and that it is now working, I would suggest that there was an intermittent connectivity issue.

I am becoming somewhat suspicious of Outlook's reliability!!  I use it extensively and generally have no issues with it.  I do though have issues with the mobile version on an Amazon Fire tablet ... it is currently refusing to down load emails.  Amazon's version is months old, so there is no support available.

2010 is even more ancient - I would look towards getting on to a newer version ... and a 2.8GB .pst file will perform like a two legged dog.  I trust that you have got that backed up?

Re: Globalnet email stopped working

Thanks, Townman.

I think it's time I had a general upgrade.

Oh, and took a more up-to-date backup.
