@prosser99 The feeling around here is that PN are considering the withdrawal of email in total - it is no longer offered to new customers and the 'email only' account option for customers leaving Plusnet was stopped in June.

It will not be possible to 'forward' mail - the account is totally closed on leaving.

Yes, but surely they cant just drop it for existing customers as its part of the contract we have with them.

It is not 'part of the contract', it is actually a 'free service', and PN are not the only ISP considering/having no email service.

But it is not going to be dropped for existing customers* - it is the no-longer-a-customer users who will lose the whilst-you-are-a-customer functionality.  When you leave there is then no contract.

The future of Plusnet's mail service has not been defined.

Plusnet used to charge for email only services subsequent to no longer being a broadband user, but with the advent of the new billing system, it was not possible to process such charges, so charging was ceased.  Subsequently retention of free email services after ceasing to be a customer was withdrawn ... for very understandable commercial reasons.

 

*Where a customer is defined as a specific account / contract.  A new account (for whatever reason) is a new customer.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

One would hope that they don't just "drop" it - at least 6 months notice would be nice.

 

You may not be aware that if you sign up to PlusNet FTTP on the OpenReach network as an existing customer you lose your phone number as no services are offered on FTTP and their is no way to port the number out - except to sign up as a new customer and lose your e-mail.

Not an issue for me, according to https://www.openreach.com/fibre-checker they won't be putting FTTP in here until the end of 2026. The company that has put FTTP in say they can move our current number to a voip service.

The ability to move a number to VoIP is not a technical matter, but a commercial one.  It is more what services does a service provider chose to offer.  Plusnet has chosen not to offer VoIP nor the ability to gracefully migrate a land line number to an alternative provider WITHOUT losing the existing account and its facilities.

Ofcom has sought to act in this space.  CP/ISPs were supposed to have processes in place this month to allow graceful migration to VoIP where they choose not to provide such services.  That deadline has been extended to April 2023...

Your observation does though raise some interesting questions about such an exit journey from Plusnet, notably would the request to transfer your phone number to VoIP count as formal notice to Plusnet as per the T&Cs.

The response received is that a transfer of the landline number to VoIP would be accepted at fair notice of termination of service as defined in the T&Cs.  ETCs might apply.
