Manage Your Plusnet Mailboxes

I have been using Plusnet for about 12 years and, as a very old age pensioner, it fully satisfies my modest requirements for email and internet access via my desktop computer. (MS Windows & Outlook)

Although my wife corresponds with family and friends via my email address I did, several years ago, create a Plusnet “Alias” email address for her so that this address could be left with online clothing companies used by her.

Last week I attempted in vain via ~ “Manage your PlusNet mailboxes”; then “Mailboxes”; then “Add new mailbox” to create a mailbox for my wife ~ so that, where occasionally necessary, she could send emails using her own name.

The Plusnet Help pages had said “Having a separate mailbox is handy if you want someone in your family to have their own email address on your account

However, during a phone call to Plusnet Help this morning (3/1/23) I was advised that the "Add new mailbox" facility has been withdrawn --------- with the relevant pages still to be revised.

I am also advised that the “Add new mailbox” & “Alias” facilities’ have also been withdrawn from new Plusnet accounts.

Have I misunderstood the advice given, or is there a way around the issue?

Fix

However, during a phone call to Plusnet Help this morning (3/1/23) I was advised that the "Add new mailbox" facility has been withdrawn --------- with the relevant pages still to be revised.

I am also advised that the “Add new mailbox” & “Alias” facilities’ have also been withdrawn from new Plusnet accounts.

That is correct for new accounts but your account will still have the facility.

Your problem is that you cannot have an alias and mailbox with the same name. You need to delete the alias then Iit will allow you to create the mailbox.

Re: Manage Your Plusnet Mailboxes

Adding to the above, when you have got the secondary mailbox set up, your wife will need to log into it slightly different to the shared (default) mailbox.

  • Default: AccountName and AccountName password
  • Secondary: AccounName+MailboxName and MailboxName password

Re: Manage Your Plusnet Mailboxes

Thanks for your response.

Although apprehensive of the warning “once deleted you won’t be able to recover it” I have deleted my wife’s “Alias” address and attempted to add a mailbox for her by entering a mailbox name and password.

I chose a new password of 9 letters/numbers then clicked “add” but received the message: ~ “Invalid password please read instructions below!

Having read the instructions, I could see no problem with the characters entered. However, in case the system required my own Plusnet login password I tried using this but again it was rejected on the basis of an invalid password. Various permutations of 8 characters were also rejected.

I appear to have taken a step backward on this issue but wonder if there is an obvious solution?

Alternatively, might another phone call to the helpline resolve the issue?

Re: Manage Your Plusnet Mailboxes

The solution is right in front of you, but not obvious.

The rules for a password describe the length and 4 groups of characters which may be used in the password.  What the guidance does not state is that the password must contain at least one character from each group.

Re: Manage Your Plusnet Mailboxes

Yes, the password instructions are NOT clear.

IIRC Rather than 8-16 characters using ANY of the character sets , it really means 8-16 with AT LEAST ONE of each i.e lower case, upper case, numeric and special

Try that and post back.

edit: @Townman types faster than me

Re: Manage Your Plusnet Mailboxes

Eureka!!-----------------  the solution to the problem turned out to be so simple.

Thank you both for  helping me to create a mailbox for my wife. This afternoon I'll try opening an  account for her in my MS Outlook and hope that it recognises the new Plusnet mailbox
