Not receiving new emails in new Outlook

Reluctantly I finally had to switch to new Outlook to receive my emails on my Windows 10 laptop.      I followed the instructions in previous forum posts and all the emails in my inboxes downloaded successfully.   However I cannot receive new emails, only the advertising ones like for an Ocean credit card,   I can send emails and receive them on my mobile phone but nothing shows up on my new Outlook.

For Inbound IMAP I am using imap.plus.net port 993 encryption SSL/TLS

For outbound SMTP I am using relay.plus.net port 587 encryption StartTLS

I know it's a terrible email client but can someone please help me so I can at least receive new emails.  I woukd be most grsteful if anyone can help solve this problem for me,

Try setting the IMAP root folder to inbox.

@Townman:

I much appreciate your reply but I'm sorry, I don't quite follow what you mean by setting the IMAP root folder to inbox. How do I do that?   I'm 84 years old so I need to have things explained in detail what I need to.

I removed one of my accounts and tried various other options but in the end i had to revert to the settings I described in my original post.   My old emails returned but still would not accept any new ones.

@coastergrotto

Oh Dear!!!

That's a very fair question ... and on inspecting the 'new' outlook program in detail, I see that this very typical setting is not there to be modified.

Microsoft's attempt to make life simpler for users such as your self, has in fact made life much more complicated.  If the target mail service does not match Microsoft's view of the world, life becomes very difficult with the 'new' product.

If you do not have a subscription to Microsoft365 (which delivers 'proper' outlook) then I suggest that you look for a different email client.  There are many to chose from.  Personally I'm not keen on Thunderbird, but t does the job reasonably well ... and there are a good few folk around here who are very familiar with it.

This setting though might not be the issue - when you look at the accounts page in 'new' outlook, does it indicate if there is a sign in issue to the account?

Re: Not receiving new emails in new Outlook

I have solved the problem temporarily by taking the option in Settings to switch back to Windows Mail.    It works until I close down the laptop and then I have to repeat the process the next time I switch on.

I fill in the report form every time in the vague hope that someone from Microsoft might respond.  Not much chance of that though.   Why Microsoft think this is a better email client than Windows Mail or even Outlook Express is beyond me.

Re: Not receiving new emails in new Outlook

Fix

If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, you can download 'proper' Outlook!

New Outlook, Windows Mail, Outlook Express was a clear example of newer is not always better, twice over!!

If you liked OE, then this might be of interest / help - OE Classic - Outlook Express on Windows 10 and Windows 7 - Where is it

NOTE: I have not used this programme, I am not recommending it, but simply suggesting you might take a look.  It is not clear that it supports IMAP nor connection encryption and if it does the level of TLS it offers.  It is though worth a look if OE is where you feel the most comfortable.

Re: Not receiving new emails in new Outlook

@townman1

Many thanks for that link... It works fine using POP.   Pity you can only have 2 accounts on the free version but at least it works.

After a couple of days on new Outlook the box allowing you to switch back to Windows Mail disappeared.   When I get time I may still try to configure it as I don't like to be beaten!

Anyway thanks so much for all your help.  I very much appreciate it.

Re: Not receiving new emails in new Outlook

The option to switch back to Mail does still exist although MS make you jump through hoops to get there!  Open New Outlook go to settings, general and about Outlook. Tick or untick 'Send troubleshooting data'.  Close New Outlook.  Click on Mail icon in start menu. Mail will try and probably fail to open. Go back to New Outlook and repeat the process above. With luck the option to go back to Mail will reappear.  If not repeat this process until it does!

Thank you Microsoft for making my and my wifes email life a misery for the last month. New Outlook does not work with Plusnet mail boxes and will not even sync my old Freenetname domain name!

Re: Not receiving new emails in new Outlook

It does not work well with many non-Microsoft mail services.

If you like OE, have you looked at Thunderbird?  There are other email clients other there...
