Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

Hi all

Having difficulty setting up plus net email using IMAP on new laptop with O365 and Windows 11.  It seems that outlook no longer allows me to enter USERNAME i need this as it is different to the actual email address.  I have tried to download Outlook classic but this does not seem to offer any different configuration screen i can only enter email and IMAP settings which will fail.

Any advice or am do i need to bit the bullet and ditch plus net for another ISP email host.

Thanks

@jab1 - behave!! Wink

From personal experience Microsoft 365 will allow user name to be the Plusnet account / mailbox. You do though need to choose set up manually.

From testing I’ve done elsewhere, Plusnet’s mail servers will accept the email address as the login ID - including that related to a hosted domain.

@jab1

To be fair to precisely what you said, “Windows Mail” and “New Outlook” which indeed are best walked away from, are not the same as “Microsoft 365 Outlook” which is a dammed good email client.

The different products might share the name “outlook” but that’s about all they have in common.

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

Understood, @Townman , but as you know, I've been using TB for many, many years, and have replaced as many MS applications on my Windows as possible - and now moved totally off that platform, apart from using two third-party programs on the still-functioning machine because for the little use they get and the inbuilt CD/DVD, it is easier for my ageing brain.

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

I am trying to add username but I am no longer getting the option to include that.   When i click manual settings i only get the standard setup with no username option now.  It is brand new laptop with Win 11

How do i know if i am really running O365 Outlook and not just a outlook freebe.  I have a family account on O365 so should be ok.

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

Fix
Have you DOWNLOADED the 365 installation? That puts the office suite onto the device.

Proper outlook’s menu bar looks like the other office products. File -> Account settings -> shoes the server settings and the account settings in separate options on the account settings drop down.

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

WOW Thanks @Townman  IT IS FIXED.

So when i added new account I entered the  the "account username"+"secondary email username"@myname.plus.com

(I am plus net earlier adopter and I have an extra domain name but that did not work so i reverted to the original name.plus.com account).

Then when i finally got some additional menus I could then add the user name as "account username"+"secondary username" and the password for the Secondary username account.

The resolved name in outlook was terrible but i could change that in the ribbon to name@domain.co.uk.  All good.

So the KEY TO SOLVING this is to enter the original plus net account email name including any secondary name if using that.

That Might be worth elevating or explaining more clearly by you more expert superusers as I am sure that is what is blocking may other Plus net imap users.  The interface has definitely changed in recent Outlook versions it used to pop up with the manual adjustments easily but for the last 4 hours it just spins around say "setting up"

THANKS ALL

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

Hereunder is a possible misunderstanding of MS's current marketing.

Some new devices come with a freebee subscription (six months?) for 365. After that, then's there's an ongoing cost. My understanding is that MS 365 is a subscription service.

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

The product branding (and characteristics) are confusing.

There is a free version of Microsoft 365 which is all browser based and all documents are held in OneDrive.

There is also a subscription version which allows the real products to be downloaded and files stored wherever.

I think that the on-line version of Outlook will only access Microsoft email services.

See https://www.office.com/

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

I tried that (account+Email@account.plus.net) and it does not work - the Outlook client will not accept it as a valid email address.

If i set it up with the valid email and then make sure i set the IMAP and SMTP servers correctly (Outlook forces what it thinks is correct!), set the account+email as the ID for SMTP and set the correct passwords throughout the account is created - but the all but 2 folders in my inbox contain nothing!

The inbox itself is correct, the trash folder is correct and one folder contains an email from 6 years ago!  All the others are empty.

@ddingbat

I tried that (account+Email@account.plus.net) and it does not work - the Outlook client will not accept it as a valid email address.

The email address is email@accountname.plus.com

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

@Dan_the_Van Yes, I know that!

I was, in desperation, trying what Mike Baul mentioned because I have tried  everything else and nothing works in so-call NEW Outlook.

Unlike the "classic" version there is nowhere for your to specify user id in the form "account+email" for IMAP . I can get all my folders to appear - but they almost all empty! And no, waiting does not cause them to fill up. On the classic version and thunderbird that happens in seconds.

My surmise, and that is all it is, is that somewhere in the bowels of "New Outlook" it is making an assumption about your ID that is in some weird way good enough to get the folders shown, but that is all!

Goodbye and goodnight Microsoft! Thunderbird rises again!

Re: Outlook 365 and Plus net imap

If get the holders shown then you are logged in and the issue is something else. That is sometimes the need to specify the IMAP root folder - if required it should be inbox
