when those emails are already in the sent items folder?
Only if all clients use IMAP , which I agree is good idea. However there are people out there (I used to be one!) who use POP and leave messages on server.
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

This is how I have my emails set up.... I have my Plusnet account set up as pop on my iPhone and have imap on my PC, so my phone acts as access to my emails as and when I want to check them and my PC is my hub on which I have my email filing system etc. This system has worked for me for years and fits in with how everything is set up. I turn my PC off when I am not using it as, as mentioned before, I can keep an eye on things via my phone. In addition, I have confidential stuff on my PC (I do some work for the NHS) and so don't want it running when I'm not around.
Jab1 - I will investigate mailwasher.
Townman - I am a bit confused because surely I have to send an email to myself for it to appear in the send box in the first place and therefore will always arrive in my inbox too.
Mister W - I have not thought about an alias but it is an option. I am waiting to see if blocking my own email address works without any hitches. The current scam spam campaign appears to have wound down for the moment - until the next one comes along!
Thanks everyone for your suggestions.

The typical reasons for suggesting merit in using POP3 is solely to relieve the user from taking responsibility for email house keeping (archiving and back up).

Does not compute.
Using IMAP assumes that the people operating the server will backup stuff still in the inbox.
people using POP (and removing incoming mail from the server, which is how I configure my client) wholely accept they have to have backup plans. Unless (of course) there are other backups of the e-mail servers which the end-user is unaware of.
I have never, ever possessed a smartphone, so your reference to a phone is, um, irrelevant?
I do have a mobile phone (for phone calls and, mainly, pushed SMS messages).

I suggest that it’s highly presumptuous that people have decent back up strategies for their PCs … and would know how to do a restore in the event of a major failure

Some setups can result in multiple replies being sent. KISS.

Hi all
My inboxes have been set up this way for years and it's always worked very well - and simply - for me for my needs. I just wanted to find out if there was a way of stopping the scam spam emails.
Thanks for everyone's help.

OK back to the core issue here of not being able to filter inbound emails from yourself because you copy yourself...
"Set up this way for years..." do you mean as in keeping things simple (KISS) by using IMAP everywhere, or set up in a not so simple way using POP3 on the phone requiring the necessity to copy yourself? What's the issue with using IMAP on the phone?
We seem to be going round in circles offering solutions which will not work due to the practice of sending to yourself ... which is not required if everywhere is using IMAP.
