MisterW
Many thanks for that explanation, and I will raise this with names.co.uk on Monday in the hope that they will implement SRS on my freeparking hosted domain. If they won't, would moving the hosting to Plusnet solve the problem? Can't really complain after getting mainly trouble free hosting since Mar 2000.

Its not possible to move domains to Plusnet any more. Existing hosted domains can remain but its no longer possible to move domains in.
If names cant implement SRS for forwarded email then I would suggest getting a proper hosted email package for your domain.

Thanks @MisterW . Just to confirm that your recommendation of Plusnet-specific text to add to my SPF record at Fasthosts is working - I can now send messages to Gmail mailboxes again. For the moment I've not deleted the other part of the record, which relates to Fasthosts' own mailservers. I might remove that part at a later date, but for now if it ain't broke...
Obviously I'll have to keep an eye out in case Plusnet changes its servers. But if that happend I'm sure there would be some helpful messages here.

I also have domains with Fasthosts and have been having the gmail rejection problems ......... I've followed the advice given (thanks) and changed the TXT record at Fasthosts for my domains but I now notice that the Fasthosts control panel is saying:
This record has been manually changed.
Please change to v=spf1 a ip4:213.171.216.0/24 ip4:77.68.64.0/27 mx ~all to restore automatic updates.
suggesting that some sort of "automatic update" has been clobbered by the change.......
Would it perhaps be better to add the Plusnet details as an additional TXT record rather than editing the existing one?

There can only be one SPF record for a domain.
This record has been manually changed.

I can only think that FH is suggesting changing the SPF back to THEIR standard one for using their servers to send email.
If your domain is HOSTED ( as opposed to just registered ) at FH then you should really be using their servers no PNs

Don't worry @peabee - I see that warning too. You can ignore it. If your mailbox is (as I think) actually with Plusnet and you're using your domain at Fasthosts as a mail forwarder (as I am) then you can do one of two things:
1. Just have Plusnet details in your SPF record, so it reads:
v=spf1 mx [the 'includes' for Plusnet given by @MisterW] ~all
or (what I've done, but which is probably not necessary)
2. Put both the Fasthosts mailserver info AND the Plusnet includes in your SPF record, so it reads
v=spf1 a [Fasthosts info as above, from ip4 to /27] mx [Plusnet 'includes'] ~all
The second option certainly works for me, and I'm 99.9% sure that the first option would work too.as I don't use the Fasthosts mail servers and therefore don't need the 'a' section.
As @MisterW says, there can be only one SPF record for a domain so everything has to be put into one line (in the Fasthosts TXT record, as I think you already know).

Hi everyone, I've read all the varios comments, replies and recommendations but I must confess I am not at this level of competency and don't really have a clue where to stsrt. Could someone give me a step by step guide of what to do please?
I have been with Plusnet for well over 15 years and they host my domain zeroble.net, which is me and my wife's primary email account. All has been great and I haven't had to tweak anything since the original set up all that time ago. Until the recent issue with Gmail and this message "Diagnostic-Code: smtp; 550-5.7.26 This mail is unauthenticated, which poses a security risk to the...
Thanks, any help much appreciated

@Zeroblue for completeness I've shown the details here as constructed by one of my colleagues @Townman :-
For Plusnet brand registered and managed domains, SPF configuration is facilitated by the addition of a TXT record in the domain's DNS settings. Plusnet's DNS configuration tool for hosted domains does not permit the creation of TXT records. However, there is an unsupported "facilitation" which will create an SPF record for a hosted domain.
On the basis that your account ALREADY has a hosted domain:
- Log into the user portal
- Go to Manage Account
- Manage Your Domains (Manage your domains link)
- Configure domain name
- Create an "Additional DNS records (Advanced)" as follows...
For the avoidance of doubt leave the left side blank, exactly as shown.
NB it will take up to 6 hours before the SPF record is visible

Thank you for the walkthrough; I've been experiencing exactly this problem when I send to gmail, either from my domain or via webmail.
Plusnet 'support' were unable or unwilling to help and suggested I open a third party email account "as Plusnet will soon cease email services"!!!!! This is not good news and will result in me changing broadband supplier, phone supplier, webspace host, email host and probably things I've forgotten.
Plusnet appears to have grown too big and only wants to bother with the most profitable parts of its business.
Anyway, I've done as you suggest and will now wait for 6 hours with fingers crossed.

@Richard-261 Plusnet 1st-line support are not trained on email issues - there are too many variables.
"as Plusnet will soon cease email services" - this has been done to death, is not in current plans, and first-line support have supposedly been told to cease giving out misleading information. Sounds like some of them need further 'education'.

Sorry to be dense, how do I access these security settings?
I use a hosted domain (myname.com) and use the original email settings both for pop3 and imap
Gmail dislikes both.
Is it from the email section or the domains section in my PlusNet account?
Thanks
Roy
