SPAM Issues

Hi All.

A friend has been unable to successfully send emails to my Plusnet email account because they are rejected by the Plusnet server as being spam - see below (email addresses and subject redacted):

===============================================================================================

Subject:     Message Delivery Failure
Date:     Wed, 11 Oct 2023 08:52:37 -0700
From:     mailer-daemon@secureserver.net
To:     xsenderx@dd.co.uk

This is an automatically generated Delivery Status Notification.
Delivery to the following recipients failed permanently:

* xmex@dd.me.uk

Reason: There was an error while attempting to deliver your message with [Subject: "Re: < subject here >"] to xmex@dd.me.uk. MTA p3plwbeout25-01.prod.phx3.secureserver.net received this response from the destination host IP - 212.159.8.200 - 552 , 552 Spam Message Rejected .

===============================================================================================

I have got the Plusnet spam filter active ever since it was offered after the Plusnet issues with Spam emails many years ago.  It occurs to me that I very rarely receive any emails with the "[-SPAM-]" added to the email subject.  The help mentions getting emails stating that emails have been quarantined but I have never seen such an email.

Note that I use Gmail to access my email using IMAP.  I do reasonably regularly get emails marked as spam by Gmail.

So my questions are:

  1. Why am I not receiving the emails?
  2. Why do I so rarely get any emails with "[-SPAM-]" added to the subject?
  3. Why don't I get any emails saying an email has been quarantined?
  4. Why are there no emails at all in my webmail Junk folder?
  5. How do I remedy this?

Thanks for any help.

Re: SPAM Issues

There could be quite a lot of factors, is your friend using his own domain, is the provider known for spamming etc?

Re: SPAM Issues

Thanks for the response. The answers are yes and no.

Since the post, I have disabled the Plusnet spam filtering; the emails are no longer rejected and I now receive the emails.

What I still don't understand is why I was not getting any emails notifying me that suspected spam mail has been quarantined

Re: SPAM Issues

The only time you would get notification of 'quarantined' messages is if the Cloudmark system couldn't decide if they were spam - based on the algorithms it uses - others do not generate a notification.

Re: SPAM Issues

Ok, but why have I never received such a notification?

And i thought that spam messages were meant to end up in my "Junk" folder but there is nothing there?

Re: SPAM Issues

You have never received a notification because the messages did not fit the criteria for one to be sent.

Where messages end up depends on how you have set up the mail filtering - For almost as long as I've used  Plusnet mail, I have had all filters disabled, and use a third-party program to filter.

Re: SPAM Issues

Notification / being marked [SPAM] / being discarded all depends on the multitude of spam setting options.  You have only commented that you switched off spam filtering; you did not detail what the settings were, so it is not possible to answer why you have not seen the behaviour you expected.
