Unable to use New Outlook on Windows 11

Recently switched over to New Outlook and it has automatically accepted my Gmail address but not my Plusnet email account. It Requests a sign in and on clicking continue tells me I need to sync my IMAP account. Continuing it requests an IMAP/POP password. Microsoft support informs me this should be my current email password and that should work, but it doesn't.

The subsequent screen tells me sign in has failed.

MS support now tell me I may have to generate an App password but I have no idea what this is or how to do it.

Does this replace my current Email password? Or is it something different?

Any help on how to do this would be appreciated. I attache the sequence of events by screen shots 1 to 4

Fix

@GeoffB2 

If you look at screenshot (20) there is a an option to 'Show more' You need to select that.

You are then presented with the inbound and outbound settings, which are

Inbound IMAP - imap.plus.net port 993 encryption TLS/SSL

Outbound SMTP - relay.plus.net port 587 encryption STARTTLS

Username…

If it is the default email account just use the Plusnet account name

If it’s a secondary email account use Accountname+mailboxname

Use the password for the account required

Sadly this solution points to the nonsense offered by Microsoft support.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.

The wonders of New Outlook and other Microsoft mail clients and probably others is they make up the IMAP and SMTP server names.

For new Outlook 'Use recommended settings' is flawed and should be turned off, .

TBF life is made less easy around here as neither auto discover is implemented nor are the 'typical' server names used as DEFAULT.

  • pop3.plus.net
  • imap.plus.net
  • smtp.plus.net

All exist, but they are all not in the security certificates.

That said the expected server names would be *.account.plus.com

Many thanks for the advice. I am glad the forum is out there. MS support seemed unaware of the issue and had no idea how to solve it.

Hi, I have the same problem with the new outlook - no problem with outlook.com emails, gmail etc but can't get 'postmaster' plusnet email to take despite following your guidance and the other thread you responded to where Rachel had the same problem. I usually get the error message 'INVALIDCREDENTIALS INTERACTION REQUIRED' but occasionally I get 'INVALID CREDENTIALS TEMPORARILYUNAVAILABLE'

I've tried POP3 and also used ports 110/25 which were the ports showing for the plusnet email in outlook 2016 which works fine

Any suggestions or should I give up like Rachel?

Hi

All I can tell you is I followed the advice given by Dan the Van and it solved the problem.
