Update from two weeks ago. Transfer happened on Thursday. Got a notification from Ecohosting that it had been done and set up my email accounts - I went for the 10 mailbox option at £18/yr - and had to get their support to help with the nameservers as I had no idea how to do that! As the domain was for email only and not hosting a website it was done within ten minutes and I now have webmail and all set up on Thunderbird and Android tablets and all seems to be tickety boo. No problems with anything so far, good and fast and their servers run on green energy, so pretty pleased.

On the recommendation of one of the members here I recently transferred 4 domains over to Ecohosting.
Move was effortless with members of the team supporting every stage.

To continue this in case needed: I've just seen a comment elsewhere on Purelymail that sounds promising.
Check out Purelymail for the cheapest reliable domain email at $10 a year, including multiple domains, multiple mailboxes, etc. Just a one-man band, but very responsive.
I've checked with them that any email address can be used outbound (and had a good quick reply). You can pay-as-you-go for usage which could be even less than the $10/year in the quote. So this is top of my list if Plusnet chucks us out.
It also means I'll have very little tie to PN's broadband if I don't get a good price from them when my contract's up.

@SilverE two comments:-
1) Server(s) are US based I assume , Data Protection ?
2) What happens if the one-man has an accident or gets sick ?
Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.
