Re: reduce mail box size

Hey @stathe,

I have opened another ticket on your account and will need more information to proceed. Depending on how many emails you receive daily, it might be best to set up an email client that uses POP instead of IMAP. This way, the only limitation to your mailbox size would be the storage on your device. I will leave some information regarding IMAP and POP below If that is an avenue you want to go down, I am pretty sure some of our community members could give good recommendations on some email clients and how to set one up

TICKET: https://www.plus.net/wizard/?p=view_question&id=247123655

IMAP

  • Emails stay on Plusnet's server, even after it's checked in an email client
  • Whatever is done with emails happens on all the email applications and devices being used
  • Must connect to the internet to check emails

POP

  • Once an email client downloads the email, it is removed from Plusnet's server and cannot be viewed elsewhere
  • Emails can then be viewed offline

Re: reduce mail box size

Switch from IMAP to POP3 is not a straight forward strategy. It totally alters how email works. POP3 only looks at the inbox, not the sent items folders … or any others.

There is no real substitute to using a proper IMAP client and diligently ditching the trash. I would never recommend POP3 operation, especially where there is a requirement to access mail on more than one device.

The guide above is somewhat disingenuous. Both IMAP and POP3 clients need to connect to the internet to check emails. With either you can review off line what has been downloaded, delete them, write responses and the like … and catch up when you next connect. It is not the black and white inference that POP3 is better … beyond to some extent it negates the requirement hope users to take responsibility for managing their email history. Frankly everyone keeps more junk that is essential.

The biggest operational restriction come where users chose to use webmail rather than a device based email client.

Superusers are not staff, but they do have a direct line of communication into the business in order to raise issues, concerns and feedback from the community.
