Broadband speed

I’m toying with the idea, just toying mind you, of increasing my current broadband speed from 75/20 to the offer of 145/30 that comes up when I log into my Plusnet account since it’s only another £2.50 a month but…………..

I’m not keen to start another 24 month contract with Plusnet given the way it’s services seem to be going and the offer seems to be just that – a 24 month contract. Does anybody know if its possible to increase speed for the remainder of a contract just paying the difference? After all there’s no install/hardware changes involved, it must surely be just be a minor change to the account profile?

I perhaps shouldn’t say this but my FTTP connection has been rock solid since the day it was activated. I consistently get 74+/19+ and no problems with charges/accounts etc. Reading through the forum there seems to be lots of connection issues and charging issues that start on contract changes for whatever reason – another reason I’m hesitant. I’m a great believer in ‘if it ain’t broke don’t fix it’  so……………..

BTW. I see NS&I logon is still a problem, unless I connect through a VPN. I had the same experience with another site the other day but I can’t for the life of me remember which it was.

Re: Broadband speed

@Batfrog

Have you considered if you would actually see any benefit from the increased speeds?

What do you currently use the internet for, and do you ever experience problems such as buffering when streaming video?

Our FTTC connection is rock solid at the full contracted 80/20 and it is very rare for us, (family of 3 adults), to experience problems - we rarely have more than one video stream running at a time for example.

To me, your original post sounds as if you are reluctant to change packages because of problems reported by others, and the only reason that I can see that you have given for upgrading is that it is "only another £2.50 a month"?

Re: Broadband speed

@Mr_Paul What you say is quite correct. Sound like your usage is much the same as mine. I have three friends scattered around the country and one abroad who I fairly regularly help out via Teamviewer, (lately Rustdesk) with things like can’t access email, how to ….. in excel and other apps along with similar minor help. I even installed Office 2019 that way last week.

One reason for thinking about a speed increase was to improve the connection as I know two of my friends have 150Mhz+ not sure offhand about the others. I was just musing about it really. I’m not sure it would give much improvement anyway. As you say I probably wouldn’t notice much difference day to day. Nowadays we tend to watch TV streaming rather than ‘off air’ i.e. watch when we want to and rarely get buffering, athough we used to on FTTC for some reason.

As for ‘problems reported by others,’ to be fair I imagine as a percentage the number of Plusnet customer who have problems must be very small.

I’m of the school of thought that Plusnet will at some point be incorporated into BT. Mainly from others experience and cost I’m not keen on that. 24 months is a long time!

Maybe I’ve got the last bit wrong? But then why does the Plusnet Hub2 have a phone socket. My guess is that it would be simple to update/activate the phone firmware once transferred to BT.

Still, the question remains could I increase my speed without a new 24 month contract if I wanted to?
