Re: Can Plusnet be connected to existing Talk Talk fibre installation?

@cemcgill

Find the websites for the following and use their PostCode checker to see if they supply FTTP for your new property.

CityFibre and Community Fibre

From what you just posted OpenReach do. Once you find out which of the others do, then you're in a position to make a choice of supplier. If CF do supply the address, then you are free to use any ISP who uses CF - I believe Zen Internet do.

Note you will lose your analogue phone line plus any PN add ons you may have (like email) if you leave PN.

Re: Can Plusnet be connected to existing Talk Talk fibre installation?

@cemcgill whatever is in place is NOT an Openreach Fibre install. If it was, the narrative below the Availability results would say 'ONT exists' . Rather it says 'new ONT can be ordered', so it will be a new install and a new hole and ONT will be required.

Slightly concerning is the phrase 'Complex L2C' which implies the install may not be simple.

Is access to the building difficult ?

As an aside, the 'new hole  'is tiny, and will be hidden behind the external CSP and internal ONT anyway.

Ahh, I see... re: access to the building: it's an old 1900s tenement, and my flat's on the 3rd floor, which is itself on a fairly steep hill. I have very little idea how fibre is actually installed; does that mean they'll have to send someone up a ladder/scaffolding to drill through the wall from the outside? Or maybe it's a problem as the walls are old/thick?

@Cjab - that's certainly good to hear! That's what I was hoping - the whole mess still seems like a bit of a faff, though. I suppose that's what I get for moving into an old tenement Smiley

@cemcgill

remember to engage with the property management for the flats as they may need to grant permission for any external work.

Have you a reason to stay with plusnet as you could move to the current infrastructure provider.

Check City Fibre here https://cityfibre.com/ who are used by a number of  providers

@cemcgill

Your mention of "tenement" suggests to me that you are in Scotland?

I don't know if Scottish law is different from English in this respect, but do you own your flat outright, (ie freehold not leasehold)?

If not, you may need to seek the permission of your landlord regarding the drilling of holes before any new installation.

Re: Can Plusnet be connected to existing Talk Talk fibre installation?

Aha - @bmc, I just used the CityFibre postcode checker and they said my address is connected to their network, so that must be the one. (Community Fibre refused even to recognise my address, so that one seems like a no, too.)

@Mr_Paul - I'm in Scotland, that's right - I'll own the flat outright (freehold), so hopefully there shouldn't be any problems there. I'd likely still let the factor know, though (never lived in a flat with a factor before so not sure of the ettiquette, but seems a sensible thing to do.)

@Dan_the_Van In all honesty, I myself am actually not with Plusnet or any other ISP at the moment - previously I've always lived with roomates/family, and didn't have to set up the internet myself. My family's used Plusnet for a while though, and after hearing absolute horror stories about nearly every other provider (including TalkTalk), I really wanted to see if I could sign on with them for my own flat.

It does sound like the easiest thing to do at this point though (especially if there's "'Complex L2C''/installation difficulties) would be to find a provider who uses CityFibre - if I can find one without atrocious reviews...

Look at Zen. They are not the cheapest by any means but in terms of customer service you do get what you pay for: https://www.zen.co.uk/

@cemcgill Don't know what your budget is, but if you already have a CityFibre installation in the new flat, I could suggest looking at Zen Internet - they use CF as a a carrier, so there would be no need for any work, other than getting them to switch the provision.

I moved from Plusnet FTTC to Zen Internet via CityFibre FTTP about two months ago.

They are not the cheapest, but so far I can't fault them.

@cemcgill in that case I'd look at Zen https://www.zen.co.uk/

@Baldrick1 I'm paying £28.00/mo for 100/20 from them at the moment - not that expensive when you look at others - IMO.

Re: Can Plusnet be connected to existing Talk Talk fibre installation?

I'm paying £32/month for 300/300 down/up, but due to the way CityFibre provision services, (at least in my area), I'm actually getting just over 900meg upload, which Zen don't seem to cap.

Zen's clearly the winner! 😂 That's great to hear - I'll check them out, then. Thanks so much for your help, everyone; as you can probably tell I'm *very* much not an expert in this area, and you've all been tremendously helpful in helping me figure this out. Truly, it takes a village to get broadband in an old tenement flat... 🤦😅
