Disabling land lines by end 2025 but we have no fibre to house

So plusnet have just announced that landlines and copper network will be disabled by end of 2025 but we dont have fibre to the house.  Is that coming or will the fibre to exchange box and copper to house remain?  But with no landline function.

Would be nice to get fibre but we are currently not scheduled to get it Sad

@Mouldy It is not PN who have announced the closure of the PSTN system, but BT/Openreach. What connection do you currently have?

@Mouldy - Perhaps you could have a look here to what Openreach say about full fiber in your area @ Ultrafast Full Fibre Broadband | Openreach

As well there's an influx of other providers like City Fiber who are installing their own independent FTTP network so it would be worth while checking if another provider is available.

The copper network is NOT being disabled at the end of 2025 - it is just  PSTN the phone system that uses the copper network that is being retired.

The copper network will continue to be used for ADSL and FTTC for years. So even without FTTP VoIP phone connections will be available via ADSL or FTTC (except through Plusnet who aren't providing VoIP).

You will probably be offered this, also know as SOGEA (Single Order Generic Ethernet Access)

We have fibre to cabinet..  So around 70mbits  which is fine TBH.

So if we keep what we have thats ok.   Fibre would be nice - obviously.

Re: Disabling land lines by end 2025 but we have no fibre to house

Just checked on openreach and it just confirms I only have superfast ie fibre to cabinet and copper to house.  It gives no clue as to when fibre may be installed.  The earlier part of my street diud get virgin fibre a couple of years ago but it stopped at the bridge.  Hopefully when we do get it, it wont be Virgin.  I dont want to go with them 😉

Re: Disabling land lines by end 2025 but we have no fibre to house

That is all very well but .....

Our house, for instance, is three cottages knocked into one, but only one room deep, which we have lived in for nearly 50 years.  If my mobile phone happens to be downstairs, I will not hear it ring if I am upstairs.  Both my sight and my fingers discriminate against my using one.  And what happens if my battery is flat ?  I am frankly too old to be glued to my phone because I still have a life to lead, despite my advancing years.  If I want to look something up, I go to my desktop computer.  I have several handsets around the house which means if the phone rings, I can answer easily without breaking my neck in a rush to get down or upstairs to where I have left the phone.

The last thing I want at my age is to be dependant on a mobile phone that costs the earth to use, is hopeless for anyone with elderly sight and fat fingers to be able to use, runs out of juice, is far too expensive, is always in the wrong place and far too difficult to operate with arthritis.

Quite frankly, this is simple discrimination and in many cases will lead to social isolation.  Why is it that we are bombarded with political correctness about subjects which I dare not mention for fear of causing offence, but it is perfectly acceptable to ostracise the elderly ?

Postscript

I should add that broadband may be "superfast" but that does not apply to me !

@shermans  -  you need to look into moving your landline and broadband to an ISP who can supply you with a VoIP service (i.e. landline phone via broadband), then you should be able to plug your existing telephone(s) in to your router using an adaptor like this - YouTube : Grandstream HT801 ATA - Keeping your analog dreams alive!

You might want to consider moving sooner rather than later, because although the old analogue phone system will be switched off by the end of 2025,  Openreach will stop selling copper lines with phone capability on 5th September 2023, so moving to a new provider after that date will have the additional complication of having to simultaneously convert your landline phone number to a VoIP service, but also your broadband will have to move from FTTC to SoGEA (hybrid fibre without phone) - unless your home can be provided with WBC FTTP in which case you will be forced to upgrade to full fibre !

Yes but you can forgive the misunderstanding when there are headlines like this -

ISPreview : UK ISP Plusnet Scrap Phone – Launch Standalone FTTC Broadband

Anything written by that guy needs to be taken with at least 1kg of salt, and for someone who claims to be a 'professional technology writer', he is clueless.

@jab1 I would say that's a rather harsh comment about ISPreview, there's a good deal of useful info there. However some people's comments and forum posts are unbelievably clueless.😁
