When my contract ends in a few months time, I’m thinking of changing from FTTC to FTTP. However I realise that there are still a few (many) things I don’t fully understand. I have two options – either Openreach (probably via Plusnet) or Youfibre.
If I understand correctly the Openreach FTTP network is passive between the exchange and end user (thus increasing the likelihood of having working internet during a power cut – provided I can power the ONT, router and phone)
Is this also the case for the Youfibre network? Or does it have active components between the end user and a central point with power backup?
Network speeds:
For a product speed of 74 Mbps, Plusnet have a Minimum Guaranteed speed of 40 Mbps, similarly for 145 Mbps Plusnet have a minimum Guaranteed speed of 80 Mbps. Youfibre claim that their advertised speed, expected speed range, minimum Guaranteed download speed and minimum guaranteed upload speed are all the same.
Are Youfibre being overly optimistic, disingenuous or do they really have speed that never drops?
If I go for Plusnet 74 Mbps or 145 Mbps what speeds should I really expect to get on a day to day basis?
I’m sure I’ll have other questions but these will do to start with.
