Installation Location from a pole

I have a telephone pole outside my house. The phone line runs to the eaves.
In the eaves is where the master socket is, along with my router, network cabinet, main mesh node, etc…

I’m thinking of going with Full Fibre and read that there needs to be 2 boxes installed (1 exterior and 1 interior).

Would it be feasible to ask that they’re both installed inside the eaves?

Re: Installation Location from a pole

i would think that is rather unlikely, @mattsando  - the CSP (outside box) is not usually installed much above ground level as it requires work on it which is not safe on a ladder. The ONT (inside box) has a little more leeway, but must be within 1m of a power source.

Others on here may have other thoughts to help you, but your initial idea is not really feasible.

@mattsando by eaves, do you really mean a loft ?

Its possible to have the CSP installed internally now. Provided the loft is reasonably accessible and fully boarded then it MAY be possible to have bothe the CSP and ONT installed there.

Re: Installation Location from a pole

What is the CSP attached to, cable-wise? Is it to the existing copper or to a new cable run I from the street?

Yes, it’s one of three “lofts” because it’s a converted bungalow. The eaves run along where the roofline meets the floor of the new second floor.

The eaves are boarded and carpeted.

Re: Installation Location from a pole

Ultimately it would be up to the engineer doing the install to decide.  I'm pretty sure it would need to be on an external brick wall, and they would need enough access to get their equipment in there, and enough room to comfortably do the work on that box.

Re: Installation Location from a pole

@mattsando

OR will run a fibre optic cable from the CBT (Customer Block Terminal) attached to the pole to your house. They may or may not remove the existing copper cable but if you ask I suspect they would remove it.

The fibre goes to a CSP (Customer Splice Point) which is usually external at ground level so the engineer can easily splice the fibre cable to the internal connection.

As stated you may be able to get this inside in the eaves - they need to be easily accessible, floored and have power sources available (one of the ONT and one for the router). You'll not know for certain until the engineer turns up on the day.

I would personally doubt they would want to do the splicing that high up.

Re: Installation Location from a pole

I saw an OR fibre installation on a terraced house where the fibre was supplied overhead from the CBT on the pole. The new fibre was taken from the pole to the house and then down the house wall to the CSP just above ground level. Then the spliced fibre cable was taken back up the wall and through a hole drilled at first floor level where, I assume, the ONT was to be located on the inside of the wall. I do not think that OR will allow their operatives to install CSPs anywhere but at/near ground level due to the equipment involved and so I think you would need to consider something similar.

Provided a hole can be drilled through to the eaves location and the requisite power points and ready access inside are available it should be possible to have the ONT there. Note that OR will drill some holes wherever they need to tie on a ladder (where the fibre arrives at the house from the pole and where the hole is to be drilled through to the ONT if different) due to their H&S rules, but these holes should be reinstated afterwards.

Yeah, nah, that’s not happening. We’ve just spent £xx,xxx on rendering so we’re not having them drill holes in the walls for ladders or otherwise.

In which case you're not getting Full Fibre unless you put some scaffolding up for OR access and hope the engineer is happy to use it.

Securing ladders to walls is an OR Helath and Safety requirement.

Re: Installation Location from a pole

Or, of course, the CSP and ONT could be installed at ground level and then run up the outside wall to a point the installer was prepared to climb. Note: when Quinns installed my FTTP, he didn't bother with securing the ladder - but there again, he only had to secure the cable, below eaves height, and then clip it down the wall.

"Or, of course, the CSP and ONT could be installed at ground level and then run up the outside wall to a point the installer was prepared to climb."

If there is any climbing involved at all, even just to clip the new cables to the wall from the eaves down to the CSP and back up again, that implies the use of a ladder - which will, (in theory), mean the installer having to drill a temporary attachment point for his ladder, regardless of the type of work being done whilst at height?

*Assuming that scaffolding is not used.

Re: Installation Location from a pole

I'm not sure if there's an option, before install, to refuse permission to drill ladder fixings ?. In which case the install would be rescheduled with a request for a 'cherry picker'. If it is possible, the install would, almost certainly, be seriously delayed!!
