bmc thanks for your reply
The only 'phone socket' that I can find in the house is the one where my router is plugged in via a filter.
It's where I used to plug the phone and the router to when I was on ADSL, using the filter.
Since I switched to FTTC I have discarded the phone as it is not possible to use a phone line now since switching. That's not a problem for me as I use a mobile now.
I note your point about cabling from MS to router.
In response to your latest reply it would not be easy to move my entire desktop PC set up to the router to conduct a wired test. I realise there will be some degradation whilst testing using WiFi but it's the only practical way for me currently.

Someone more technical than me can give better answers but try logging into your router and look at the connection details. I can't even tell you what to look for but you should get an inkling of what speed your router is receiving.

You need to post this page from the Hub, navigate from the Home page to >Advanced Settings >Technical Log
Make sure you hide your broadband username

Thank Dan
I have attached the info page from the router.
Hope this helps.
Also I'm hoping to borrow a laptop later and will try to plug it directly into the router and do a speed test form there.

Hi Dan
Just tried a laptop wired to the router and have attached tech file. Do the results show I'm in my 44mbps minimum guaranteed speed or is there room for improvement?
Just doing a speed test showed a much improved result compared to my PC over WiFi. 52 upload and 16 download. At my wiFi connected PC getting 42 down and zero up!
Next steps, try to attach PC via ethernet to the router?

Thanks for the technical log, actually you have posted them twice, however that is a good thing.
First post shows this data
DSL uptime,4 days 22 Hours 44 Mins 30 Secs
Data rate,17.4 Mbps / 54.5 Mbps
Maximum Data rate,17.3 Mbps / 43.8 Mbps
Noise margin,5.8/2.6
Line attenuation,7.4/17.2
Signal attenuation,7.4/19.1
Second post shows this data
DSL uptime,4 days 23 Hours 8 Mins 2 Secs
Data rate,17.4 Mbps / 54.5 Mbps
Maximum Data rate,17.3 Mbps / 56.6 Mbps
Noise margin,6.0/6.4
Line attenuation,7.4/17.2
Signal attenuation,7.4/19.1
Those changes of noise margin should not really occur in short period of time (24 minutes), Maximum data is also varying. This needs to be investigated.

Your wired down speed of 52 is above the minimum of 44 so that's not a problem for investigation.
The Checker I referenced earlier will give potential speeds for you line. If 52 is within estimates then that's another avenue closed off.

First set of results:
Maximum Data rate,17.3 Mbps / 43.8 Mbps
Noise margin,5.8/2.6
Second set of results:
Maximum Data rate,17.3 Mbps / 56.6 Mbps
Noise margin,6.0/6.4
This can be a nightmare to find.
One possible explanation is that there was noise on the line when the first set were taken. This has caused the SNR to drop whilst the low speed is being caused by error correction causing data to be resent. Presumably this is short term noise else the DLM would permanently slow the line.
Do you have a Plusnet Hub 1 that you could use for running line monitoring software such as Routerstats? Unfortunately the Hub 2 isn't compatible.
Edit
If you can't find an excuse to get your internal lash up fixed for free then your best bet is to get that replaced properly, not bodged with Ethernet cable, one way or another before worrying about your speed problem.
