Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

It should be noted that if I connect by NordVPN via my router using a VPN client configuration. I am then able to connect to my company SSTP VPN. However this is not ideal as it significantly reduces my broadband connection speed and all devices and connections will then go via the NordVPN.

I was just noting it in case its off interest.

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

@andrewhawker818 I appreciate that. The main difference when connected via Nordvpn is that your public IP presented to the VPN server will be different to your Plusnet one.

I was hoping for a bit more diagnostics from the detailed option on Test-NetConnection

From the Diagnose routing succeeded result it would seem its not a routing issue.  Therefore It still looks like your VPN server is rejecting a connection based on your IP address.

edit: might be worth checking your IP isnt on any blacklists https://whatismyipaddress.com/blacklist-check

NB it will be on dnsbl.sorbs.net , they all are

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

@andrewhawker818

what is your network configuration? Are you using two routers daisy chained?

I'm might be wrong but I note a trace router with 192.168.1.254 as the default gateway but the Test connection showing the next hope as 192.168.0.111 with the test PC being 192.168.0.21

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

No its purely the fact I plugged the Plusnet Hub 2 (192.168.1.254) in for the call center to run diagnostics etc. This was the router I ran some diagnostics from at the time.

192.168.0.111 is my Asus RT-AC88U router that I have been using prior to this problem and have gone back to. The asus router allows me to configure VPN Client, DDNS etc.

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

Thanks for the answer, the question was worth asking

I am curios to know what device 192.168.0.111 is, in most cases the next hop would be the router IP Address.

Perhaps a description of you network setup would be helpful including mask used

Does you works VPN use TCP or UDP, as all the current tests would fail if UDP. I use Wireguard and that is UDP only

Do you have access to a Linux system, as it would be possible to do a traceroute to a specific port.

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

@Dan_the_Van if what @andrewhawker818 said earlier is correct that the VPN is SSTP, then its an SSL over TCP tunnel.

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

@andrewhawker818 if you're happy to PM either the IP and/or the URL for the VPN endpoint , then I'm happy to try a Test-Netconnection from my account which is on a static ip in the 80.229... subnet. I'm pretty sure that @Dan_the_Van would also help ?

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

The VPN is behind a whitelist firewall but I guess you can get the firewall at least.

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

@andrewhawker818 I think the firewall is going to be a problem.

Certainly the Test-NetConnection produces the same results as yours.

A linux traceroute using port 443 fails also.

I might be barking up the wrong tree completely here but:-

What I did notice is that the VPN URL fails a reverse lookup ?

A little more looking with dig shows the parent domain is a bt.net hosted domain

Re: Recent issues with work SSTP VPN

I have a work around at the moment so going to park this for now, my work IT are also carrying out a few investigations on there end as well now.

Thank you for your assistance, I passed the trace details etc. onto my IT department which pushed them to investigate.

If they don't come up with anything, then post back and I'll escalate this and tag one of the Plusnet network guys to see if he'll take a look.
